Michael Hayes:

Your comment was the following,

The racers are the ones that stopped those things, particularly those two, due to the wear and tear on the engine and clutch, and their impact on the car's performance.

So you thinking is some Pro Stock teams will not be competing in this burn out exhibition ?

Absolutely not, I think they will all enjoy it, Pro Stock produces the best burnouts of all the classes. The reference to dry hops and throttle wacks was related to Nitro, not PS.

not sure how to describe why i think this is going to be really great......it's just going to be really great. i'll be honest. i didn't
see any of gray's long burnouts at bir.....rarely watch PS.....wish i would have. would have been cool to see.
whoever thought up this contest @ indy should get a star......two stars ;)

I disagree, I think TAFC produces the best burnouts. I was really bummed when Todd Veney hung up the helmet. Pro Stock is the best of the "pro" cars though.

I sat in the stands and watched the pro stockers when Jenkins, Ronnie Sox, Don Nicholson, and the rest were carrying the front end on launches, then hiking the front ends back up in the air at every gear change, sliding around on the track, and occasionally you'd hear an engine zing to the moon when the driver would miss third gear. Now they are no more exciting than sitting on a slope watching cars go by on the freeway down in front of you. Same thing with the funny cars. Watch this video...turn it all the way up. Raymond Beadle making a test lap at OCIR when men were men and the women were glad of it...

Try this... If you don't want to watch the burn out skip ahead to 2:20. Scott Palmer put his TF engine into a Studebaker pro mod car. Would you show up to watch a night session of these?

After watching these would you say drag racing has become too sterile at national events?

Randy I agree with your posts, and remember all the same stuff. But racing is its own victim, if that's proper grammar. Drag racing has always been about the numbers, since the sport's very beginning. The journey has included a "golden era" of cars that were unique and put on a show. The constant quest for lower ETs and more MPH has led to many of the things we love, like wheel stands, long smoky burnouts, and dry hops being phased out. Racers got rid of all that, not the NHRA.

I agree. Back when I did match races in TA/FC in the early 1990's I did what I saw Jungle Jim (I think it was him) do one time at a match race at OCIR. He did such a long burnout that he tripped the win light in his lane before he could get it stopped. The place went nuts. Dennis Taylor and I were running each other at Palmdale and the track was terrible. On our second run of the evening DT and I decided to take them out the back door on the burn outs since we knew we wouldn't get down the track on the run. I lit up the win light coasting to a stop with a car full of tire smoke. The place went nuts, and I had a lot of fun doing it. Valve springs were not happy, though. The good ol' days. If I was still running now it would be something on nitro, either a nostalgia type funny car or fuel altered.

either a nostalgia type funny car or fuel altered.

We have both...Come on out to the midwest. We've been talking of trying to put together the meanest, fastest fuel altered ever. Have all the pieces just waiting on the boss to decide which direction he wants to go with his program.

Where would you race it, Marc? I fly out to KC once or twice year and would love to that altered in action

Could be fun. I think doing it in one session would be good enough though. I don't see many of the top teams taking part and altering their combo's. But if we get a session with bad conditions where no one is going to get in anyway, I could see more taking part.

I miss dry hops too but with the amount of power in Nitro now versus the 80's it just might not be doable.

i doubt you will see too many do long burnouts.. pro stocks say the biggest issue with the high reving motors are the valve spring life. easiest way to lose a motor for them is break a valve spring and tag a valve and then drop the valve.

We just ran our little pump combo at eddyville. Ran 3.74 @200
If we build a somewhat big show style altered we will match race it in the Midwest. There are a few of them out there now and starting to here rumblings of trying to get one to go 300.

3.74 is a pretty good 1/8 mile ET, and you were "only" 200 MPH. Would love to see you guys race in person. Would also love to see 300 from a AA/FA, altho that would be basically a T/F combo. ET for a run like that would hafta be around 2.90 something. That would be wild! I usta go to Lions Drag Strip on a Sat nite, when they had a Fuel Altered show. 7's at 200+ with a cast iron 392 motor, but it was a great show. Now you guys are running the same MPH in the 1/8 mile. :)
