The time from when both drivers light the second stage bulb to when the ambers come on varies every time. Sometimes it's quick, sometimes it's not so quick.

Exactly, the Autostart system is designed to vary the delay anywhere from, I believe, 0.9 second to 1.5 seconds...to keep drivers from being able to guess. Sometimes they guess anyway and get the donut, other times, just the hole.
