I have not tested this as I do not have AOL, but it appears you have a relatively common problem with AOL and Vista. I have pasted below what I found online: The page link is here:

Only AOL versions 7 and 8 are supported by Vista at this time. If you have version 9 expect some problems.
Current workaround for AOL 9 users with a time-out problem is a follows:
First TUNE_UP your browser making sure all plug-ins are there including Sun's Java 1.4.2
1) Logon to AOL.
2) Open a Private Chat (This will keep AOL from timing you out.) by going to People >> Start Your Own Chat >> Private Chat >> enter any name for the chat >> Go Chat
3) Minimize AOL (the [_] button NOT the [X])
4) Open up Internet Explorer.
6) Log into Vista within Internet Explorer
