You are correct! I believe Armstrong red-lighted. If I remember correctly, Settles told me he only made one qualifying attempt and qualified #1, then parked the car until the start of eliminations.Great memory Tony! I was there, I think he beat Armstrong's AA/BAD in the final. That was the same year Gary Burgin ruined Snake's otherwise perfect season.
Also, in my opinion Gary Burgin doesn't get enough credit. He had some hard running nitro funny cars in a time Snake & Beadle were dominate.
I read somewhere, back when you could make as many qualifying runs as you wanted, Burgin made 9 qualifying runs before eliminations at Indy. It may have been the year he upset Snake. if so, that would've been 13 runs during a race week!
