Great memory Tony! I was there, I think he beat Armstrong's AA/BAD in the final. That was the same year Gary Burgin ruined Snake's otherwise perfect season.

You are correct! I believe Armstrong red-lighted. If I remember correctly, Settles told me he only made one qualifying attempt and qualified #1, then parked the car until the start of eliminations.

Also, in my opinion Gary Burgin doesn't get enough credit. He had some hard running nitro funny cars in a time Snake & Beadle were dominate.

I read somewhere, back when you could make as many qualifying runs as you wanted, Burgin made 9 qualifying runs before eliminations at Indy. It may have been the year he upset Snake. if so, that would've been 13 runs during a race week!

that car was strong for sure ....... never gonna' wish i was older, but it sure would have been great to be there back then with essentially open qualifying.

Looking at Dave's car, it appeared that he had a two-speed in it. Just a dummy, as he was running high-gear only.

Eddie Hill had a dummy 2 speed in his car one year. It was when they all switched to high gear only & (I think) the clutch mgt system. He told me about that in the pits at Firebird one year. I miss Eddie & Ercie.
