I think Mike was initially confused by Eric's post because he unwisely sided with you! The elephant in the room has been pretty clearly identified otherwise. Glad when Denver gets hear (well it'll be Hebron for me) we've worn this track temp thread out.

As far as I know the Indy 500 is the only major closed circuit race that takes a four lap average to set the field.

That all happens for each driver/car in a matter of 4 or 5 mins, but would it transfer the same over 2 - 3 days at a drag race? What happens if it rains?

I'm pretty sure in all other forms of circuit racing(including Indy Car, but not the Indy 500), the driver gets one or two laps on the track and the quickest lap is what they qualify with and that happens on one day over one 2 hour time period.

It all sounds like apples and oranges to me.

There's always someone who thinks they can average run the field to death, but what they forget is, everyone else will adjust too.

Again, to have a top 16 format with today's technology, the only real answer is to have two night time qualifiers or no night time qualifiers. Potentially setting the field on one qualifying run is just stupid and not good business in this day and age.

If it rains, then set the field by points like the other sanctioning bodies that have one session for qualifying ...

Which is what I just said...eliminating Friday night time qualifying or adding a Saturday night qualifier would be the only way to go back to a top 16 format.

Now in my world, whenever possible we would qualify on Friday and Saturday evening and race on Sunday morning.

The summer races like Chicago and Norwalk, I think the entire race should be in the evening time.

I don't think the fans who plop down there money should have to sit out in the hot ass sun all day if they don't want to.
