As for the quick right turn, I've seen A/Fuel cars with bad header gaskets do the same thing, only they're longer so it just smokes the tire and drifts a little instead of making a hard turn. The unburned nitro at idle just drips out between the head and header flange, which happens to be right inline with the tire. It doesn't take much to get these cars stupid and controllable, especially in the first 30 feet.
