The solution to PJ's countdown problem came to me. Right now, there are 24 points races. Add one more race, divide the first 24 into equal parts of 6 races each, the top three finishers in each set are in and the points are reset after that 6th race. You lose points for missing more than two races during the year so you could get reset if you are in the top three of say, the first group of races. You have the potential for 12 people per trying for the top spot in the last race. It's not perfect, but it would be more interesting and we would get to see one more race during the year...

Okay here goes... We currently have 24 sanctioned points races. To make this work my way we need 25.
like this:
24 regular points races + 1 Finals race.
24 divided into equal parts is 6.
That means there are 4 groups of 6 races. (hmmm, would this give meaning back to Spring Nationals, etc?) Call them Quarter Finals.
For each grouping (quarter) of races the top three per class will qualify for the final race.
With 4 groups of races, there could be as many as 12 different people per class in the "Finals."
To keep it interesting, if someone misses two races or more, they lose a set number of points out of each quarter since each quarters points are separate. This leaves opportunity for racers that might be in 4th or 5th if someone who was 1st in points decided they could skip the rest of the year because they "qualified" for finals. But it leaves opportunity for someone to pick a race to sit out because they need the time or to save budget.
The shower was just cleaned, so no writing on the wall, sorry guys.

but like the idea, but, only the 4 quarter winners and runner-ups go to the finals. Friday night winner races Saturday night winner in a best two out of match race on Sunday.

Well I don't know if it was the points or the shower that drew so much attention but staying safely on the points thingy I think there are usually only two or three leader changes in the Fuel ranks every year mostly because only 5 or 6 teams are fully funded in a given year.
Two rules ! Cubic Inches and Cubic Money ! Equalize the first and that leaves the second , assuming of course I'm not the driver which would be a huge plus in any car !
What I'm trying to say [ and having a difficult time of it ] is it will be the same 5 or 6 cars in each 6 race group anyway but it would increase the drama by 5 anyway.
