A friend in Connecticut swears by renting one of the many mountain chalets surrounding Gatlinburg. I'm pretty biased to G'burg, Pigeon Forge, and the rest of the Smokie Mountains, since it's all practically in my backyard.
Gatlinburg is a town that's surrounded by the national park boundaries so, it can't grow anymore. It's a town in which you want to drive off the main street to one of the many parking areas, then walk it. We just did Ripley's Believe it or Not the other week, there. Sit on a bench on the sidewalk while enjoying a caramel apple and watch a taffy pulling machine that's been at work in a candy store window since the 50s (made in the 20s). It's neat watching 6 and 80 year olds standing side by side, mesmerized by it.

Drive about 5 miles outside of G'burg and, you'll come into Pigeon Forge. Three lanes on each side with tons of attractions that you drive to. Must be a dozen go cart tracks to get kicked out of.
Go another way out of G'burg toward Cades Cove. Wikipedia tells it better than I could. (LOTS of hiking trails!)

Go yet another way out of G'burb to Cherokee, NC. About the only thing anyone goes over there for anymore is to gamble at the casino or get their photo taken with an *censored*.
You could do the mountains all week, then do Bowling Green on the weekend.

My friend owns a house in Costa Rica that he rents out. It is a beautiful property and there is a ton of cool things to do there.

Man, I don't take vacations, I just take 7 Fri thru Sundays in Charlottesville in the fall for UVA football.
Costa Rica is the place to be from what I've heard from the friends.

I understand exactly what he's asking so I'll respond appropriately:
If you like comedy, take in a speech by the president.
If you like porn, watch a session of congress as they rape America.
If you like suspense, watch the current cabinet escape and dodge the tax man.
If you like love stories, watch the president bow and warm up to our enemies then apologize for our arrogance.
If you like feel good stories, you'll have to read from history.
As far as travel, I think we have no need to travel. We're being taken for a ride like never before while just staying home and working.

Yes, check out the link I posted above. There are Zip Line tours through the jungle that are amazing. The beaches are breathtaking and the night life is really kickin! There are helicopter tours that are really cool as well. It is so cool to have a flock of beautiful parrots right outside the door and to hear the screamer monkeys in the jungle is pretty awesome too. They have lots of neat critters there!
My friend has everything that you need to make your vacation awesome!

I never smoked but I love to discuss common sense (conservative values.) There is only one problem, if too many actual thinkers congregated in a group, Janet Napalitano would have to have us rounded up and sent to Guantanamo Bay - Joe's forth excellent vacation choice.
