I saw the interview and I think he was speaking of the casual fan's perspective. Everyone knows the people on Nitromater are well educated in drag racing and are not merely casual fans and I doubt he had you in mind.
My own take on the situation was the change was a good short term solution that could easily be put in place, and that we'd return to normal sooner or later.
But as I mentioned in another thread here, I heard from some very weill connected people at Indy that the NHRA brass were working on the timing for releasing the statement that all racing would be 1000' foot in 2009 and beyond.
I really think that would be a mistake. It makes about as much sense as other decisions that have been handed down, but I have the strong hunch that the lawyers and insurance people have scared Glendora into doing something silly.
I have no doubt that the meetings were taking place, but hope that common sense rears its ugly head.

Shouldn't they just have standards for shutdown areas? Remember when the same teams would run 500 cubic inch NHRA pro stock and mountain motor IHRA pro stock? Would be interesting to have a mixture of 1,320 ft and 1,000 ft tracks on the tour designated by what their shutdown qualified them for. Wonder if some teams would be better on one?

I think that may be the case, and yes the casual fan who may got to a race every 3-5 years yeah I doubt they know what's 1320 and what's 1000'.

Randy the tickets for vegas were bought in may. I watched 10 minutes of the broadcast yesterday waiting for my wife to fix her hair. Trust me, I am not spending hundreds of dollars to go to the Gatornationals or anywhere else if they don't go back to 1320.
I watched about 10 minutes tonight because I was curious about the new track , which is amazing . On the HD set I just bought, also amazing on ESPN2HD.
But it was boring. I 'd rather watch pro stock now.
Go search my old posts and see how amazing that statement is from me.
It's so damn stupid. You look at the containment system at the end of the track at Charlotte that you can see from a mile away , and wonder - why are they running 1000' foot at that track.
NHRA is cutting off it's nose to spite it's face.
It's pitiful what they are doing .They really are in a position to make this sport something bigger, and they go piss off the hardcore fans that they can count on year in , and year out.
Not me. Not anymore. I still care and I 'll still post, but I won't feel bad for not going. That's an amazing thing for me to say . I'm the kind of guy that gets goosebumps when I hear the first motor when I roll down my window on CR225 in Gainesville each year. My vacation schedule at work - 3 days in March every year for the last 12 years.
I just don't get it. It's not like they can't fix it. I 'm not going to pay good money to watch 3/4 of a drag race.

Had that very thought just tonight, Bob. Ed McCulloch nailed it when he said at Denver, "if you can't fix it (shutdown area), don't race there." Definitely a waste to be running 1000 ft. at Zmax.

I bet Don is right that the "average" fan might not notice. Just like I think track owners thought the "average" fan cared more about ETs and MPHS ran by 70s match race funnies than they may have. Noise, smoke, and fire. You might be able to run them to the 1/8 without the "average" person in the stands noticing. (weird analogy but, I used to bartend and we'd often switch draft beer brands on people just to watch them not notice, LOL)

Because................they are on the rev limiters for the last 300'.
Engine damage, of the "HOLY CRAP" variety ensues after that point.
I have been saying get rid of the limiters sine that day in June.
I also did not think they were a good idea before that, I was getting sick of going due to the fact that these events were turning into one big oilfest at the top end.
Carnage up there is wayyyyyyyyyyy down. So it's safer.
My standpoint is fix the tracks that cannot handle 330+ speeds, or eliminate them from the tour (or keep them at 1000'), remove the rev limiters, put all the nitro they can use back in, let 'em rip.
THAT is they way I would do this.
But it ain't gonna happen.
I'll go next year, and I'll enjoy myself, because that is what I will INTEND to do.

This sport is STILL the best there is, still exciting, and I'll still have the same enthusiasim that I ever had.
Because I CHOOSE to.
People will still go to the races, the stands won't empty, the sport, no matter most of what, will still go on, it has survived, at least, worse.
A few "hold my breath" hardcores won't have a effect, once the economy upswings, disposable income will once again get disposed of, and the sport will thrive.
Sorry, I could not come up with any "doom and gloom" (I try better next time.................)

I enjoy a hell of a lot more eighth mile racing than 1/4.
It's all good to me.
Everyone might want to look at costs in parts too.
We are looking at eight car finals maybe as soon as next year without help of some kind.
Who will come for short 8 car fields????

Snake was speaking figuratively. When they came out with the 1000' racing, the first question in everyone's mind was "How will the spectators respond?" The proof is out there. The spectators are still enjoying Nitro Racing as much as they ever did, pretty obvious by the reaction yesterday when Ashley took out Wilk in the first round, pretty obvious by the sellout crowd all weekend. Very few spectators are hard core as the Maters. His very next statement was how he has saved so much $$$ on parts. When was the last time someone had a catostophic engine failure? There have been zero since going '1000.

I loved the Snake as a racer, but feel that he has become arrogant. Either that or I have just become aware of it.
A couple of years ago a mate of mine scored hospitality tickets for 3 of us in the Miller tent at the Finals of their last year with Miller.
We were in the hospitality tent for 3 days, guests of Miller, and not once did Don or Larry acknowledge or speak to any of us even though they sat around and chatted with family and friends.
That did it for me as it appeared that they did not give a crap about the people in there that they didn't know.
The whole team had an air of arrogance about it, even the guy coordinating the hospitality.

I think his statement was more a comment on the change in distance. The distance is not as noticeably different as we thought it would be. Still, I'm looking fwd to 1/4 at Pomona.

We'll see next year . If it's still 1000' and the people still show, great for NHRA and anyone that cares.
As for guy referring to 'whiny babies' , I 'm not whining. I 'm making a choice as a consumer.
And expressing anger, seeing how I spent a large amount of money on a trip to Vegas before this change was made. So now I have no choice , the money is spent. Maybe I 'll be surprised and like it, but I doubt it.
I've always wanted to go to the 12 hours of Sebring anyway.
I 'm sure I 'll enjoy it. The Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta sure was fun a couple years back.

Well, Don has been there and he's done that to the extent that I'd think he can share one honest opinon without being insulted like he has been here. It's obvious to me that "they" meant the majority of the spectators, not the nitpicking, self centered hardcore ones who think that everyone in the stands sees everything exactly as they do. Damn, I must be arrogant, too.
