I hope they are going after Mountain Dew and Diet Mountain Dew in a big way, which is to say I hope they are formulating a Diet Mello Yello.

Never look a gift horse in the mouth.

Some of you folks are seriously in the scary zone on marketing knowledge.

Most of your statements are something akin to you buying a house from a custom homebuilder, having the homebuilder call you two years later telling you that your yard and upkeep look like crap and you are not worthy of owning his house .... and you saying "oh I'm sorry, I am wrong for buying your product and not promoting it correctly." Holy smoke, thoughts really process like that?

McCabe, just an FYI, but tobacco advertising has been legislatively limited for over 15 years. When Formula 1 comes back to the US, don't be surprised when a couple of cars don't have their "normal" sponsors on them.

Here is a cliff notes version of the rules:

The rule limits advertising generally to a black-and-white, text-only format to ensure that advertising is not used to create demand for these products among young people and thus undermine the restrictions on access. Billboards and other outdoor advertising are prohibited within 1,000 feet of schools and public playgrounds. The sale and distribution of non-tobacco items, such as hats and tee shirts that carry cigarette logos, such as Joe Camel, are prohibited, and sponsorship of sporting and other events is limited to the corporate name only.

Mello Yello taking over as NHRA title sponsor - SportsBusiness Daily | SportsBusiness Journal | SportsBusiness Daily Global

SO Coke owns the NOS brand too? That wouldn't fit with drag racing:confused:

By shifting the NHRA sponsorship to its Mello Yello brand, Coca-Cola executives hope the company can chip away at PepsiCo’s leadership in the citrus soda category. Pepsi’s Mountain Dew dominates the category, Coca-Cola has struggled to wrestle away some of its market share.

Mountain Dew and Diet Mountain Dew have an 84 share of the citrus segment in the soft drink category, according to Beverage Digest. Mello Yello’s share of the market is just 4 percent.

Should have sponsored women's field hockey with this loser

That certainly isn't because of anything I'VE done. I think "the dew" tastes like s&%t! I simply don't understand how anyone can drink that crap.

If it's NHRA's job to worry about the future promotion of this sport and not Coke's then we're doomed because it looks like the NHRA been taking alot for granted. I say that because if they are just looking to cash the check and let the money buy 3 years of security, that's scary. Look what they did with Pro Stock Motorcycle? I gave them credit for attacking the social media outlets 100% this year, but it's not working. NHRA and Coke need to do a SWOT Analysis(strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) and seriously work together to try and make this sport sell better in 2013.

From the outside it looks like the NHRA has just been accepting the economic downturn and trying to survive with it instead of trying to beat it. I don't care if the current ticket prices are a good value to you, there not a good value to the people not buying them and it needs to be fixed. There are several ways that can be done. Coke also needs to help the NHRA, I don't say that because the NHRA needs it, I say it because this is now gonna be the 3rd time they slap a new brand onto the series and if they want different results they gotta work for it. Mountain Dew has popularity, has nascar, has Dale Jr. and that's a hard market to chip away at.

I'll support this move if the NHRA and Coke work together in making Mellow-Yellow more of a household name. What benefit was it that I only saw the same Full Throttle commericial for NHRA every time an NHRA race was on? NHRA needs to form an alliance with companies and come up with cross promotion strategies and out of the box thinking because the same old concepts are just not working.

This was in my mail box yesterday. It is a NASCAR company business envelope from back in the NASCAR drag racing days that I bought on eBay. I think it's a pretty cool piece of history!

Wow, had the NASCAR drag division overtaken the NHRA people would be complaining about the heads at Carnegie.. I grew up in western PA just outside of Pittsburgh, that's cool that NASCAR had something based out of Carnegie.

I still don't know the facts but apparently NASCAR and NHRA were more equal before I was born. I wonder what happened? Coming from a dad who was more into drag racing over circle racing, I guess it just rubbed off on me, and therefore I can't really understand why NASCAR is so much bigger.

Looking back, Cole Trickle, Kyle Petty... Mellow Yellow... They all seemed pretty bad ass when I was a kid. Mike Minick hit it out of the park with the NHRA should be promoting the drag races so that Coke looks good, not the other way around comment.

And Mellow Yellow is not new to this - a 30 second search yielded this:

Michael Hayes brought up several examples of non traditional brands sponsoring drag racing; brands such as Wonderbread and K-love. There are many more too, wasn't Grubby sponsored by some type of makeup anti aging cream.

Often times we complain that we need more non automotive sponsors. Coke is still paying the bills, so if they want Mello Yellow then so be it.

On the surface does it seem an odd match, yup but I thought phones sponsoring car racing was odd too, since we aren't supposed to use them while driving. That seems to have worked out pretty good.

Now I would like to see Coke, or their many brands, sponsor a car or two. But I am glad to at least have a series sponsor who I know will be around for years to come. I wouldn't want to see NHRA wrapped up in a Torco trap.

Alot of people remember back to the Winston years as the great years, so what did Winston do for drag racing?

It was back when NHRA was doing for itself, and Winston saw it as a positively upward moving sport, and had no problems in promoting (with $$$) special races and a World Championship series... Prior to Winston, there were 8 major national wvent (I think)... Winston gave NHRA the backing to make the tour what it is today- good in some cases, but it did put a smash on the smaller tracks getting a weekend 8-car show on a regular basis... Everyone wanted to run for the big Winston money.. They all got spoiled...;)
