The Broken Rearend Issue

Everyone who runs the Chrisman rear knows exactly what to look out for. There's zero reason to keep that secret.

Alan

OK, Alan what was the secret ??

I don't know. I don't run a Chrisman rear. But, they changed cars, and haven't had an issue since. I can make an educated judgement based on that. (As I did before)

And I'm sure everyone in the Nitro and Alcohol pits (because many of them run the Chrisman rear) know what to look out for.

Why do you think that you HAVE TO KNOW if it doesn't affect you? I would bet than if you were a Chrisman customer when you bought a new rear, they would tell you to "double check this". But if you don't why do you care?

Just as if there was a couple of Powerglide failures, nobody if TF would care. (Well, Langdon might........)

Not arguing, just discussing...
Alan, you know we respect you, but many of of here are fascinated by the technology and inner workings of these cars. That is where the curiosity comes from. Just because we don't maintain a race car with a Chrisman rear end, doesn't mean we can't at least ask for details. No, we don't have a right to know, but I don't fault someone for inquiring.

All I will say is- it was not a fault of the rear axle(s), or parts of them as to why they failed. Nor was the chassis at fault.

likely referring to the critical maintenance of the ring gear bolts and the pinion preload on those Chrisman rears.

The "secret" that most veteran racers talk about is that those units are incredibly strong, but they are notorious for the ring gear bolts backing out if they aren't safety wired or checked frequently due to the harmonics. Also, the lube level is specific; if you run them too dry trying to find "free horsepower," you'll gall the spider gears in no time.

If you're running one, the consensus is: Check your lash and bolt torque after every few passes, or you're asking for a catastrophic failure.

i think in one of green hornet videos, he made mention of some crew changes on tony's car.
a guess would be someone/s were not servicing crucial parts correctly?

Angry Hornet. He said he would have more to say on differential when he was sure

I watched that one, it was after Georgia and he said their were new crew members and new roles as he was driving the car as it was towed back and forth from the pit. He said he liked the changes as they were necessary. We don't get the same detailed vids from him that Clay does so it would be hard to know who is new and who is gone.
