Here are some photo's of a AA/FD team I wish I could have seen. I started going to the drags in 1968 ( 8 years old )
Buy Sept of the 1966 they were history. Bob. Tom and Mike. They were the Surfers!

March Meet 1966

December 30th, 1967. Mike Sorokin driving Tony Waters AA/FD near lane at OCIR.
Sadly Mike would lose his life after a massive clutch explosion.
All three are gone, But the Surfers will live on forever in the history of Drag Racing!!!

I never saw the Surfers in person. Was in Air Force 1964 - 1968. Would go to Lions & Fernando when I was home on leave. I knew about what was going on thru Drag News, etc. Am really enjoying the photos. Also like looking at the Q lists for Bakersfield and other races. Those bring back memories. I only went to the March Meet twice, 1972 & 1973. Saw McGoose (Tom McEwen) win Bakersfield, 1972, in a Garlits chassis car. I think he ran 6.35 Low ET.

Heard a story once about a dirt bag with a big knife that wanted to take over (hi jack) one of Connie's planes. Connie "disarmed" him. Don't know what happened to the guy, but he was probably messed up. heh Would never want to be on Connies bad side. Connie is a great guy and has a big heart. He has flown a lot of his planes to help our troops; gone into "danger zones". Flew into China when covid started to help our people there (not sure of the details). When Shirley had her crash, Connie flew her to the surgeons she needed to get to.

other one, is that becauce Ivo was running an open rearend? Maybe some one could
chime in and explain this.

The photo of Ivo w/ one slick growing more. Have seen that before. Might be that one slick is "biting" more than the other side. You wouldn't think it would happen on a burn out, but it did. I don't know the mechanical part of it. Have also seen that happen on a run & had the idea that one tire was out of the groove.

Again I want thank my son Mike, who help me with thread. He set up a ton of his computer stuff to my computer
Camera, scanner, ect. Half this stuff have no idea what it is? That is his hobby, his computer set up over $2500.00?
Pretty sure you could launch a ICBM from it. Had to go my storage unit and get 3 of my card tables just for all the crap.
The old people on here Know what a card table is. Bob, Cliff, Mark ect and maybe me. LOL

You can still buy the table's at walmart, target. They are pretty handy to have around.

Among several reasons one of the reasons I remember for open rear ends was the quality of rear axels and rear end parts back in the day. Axels were taken from a production vehicle at the junk yard cut down and resplined. Breakage was somewhat common and if a locked rear axel broke in a fuel car it developed a mind of its own. Axel breakage has been mostly eliminated today due to parts quality and retirement.

My girl friend Kathy is sitting here watching me post and just ask me if I love Drag Racing
more then anything and I said yes-yes I do. She just punched me - ouch!
And yes I do work but laid for a few weeks. Work construction I'm a professional hand shovel operator.
