I wasn't trying to hose the sportsman PJ just common sense. Look at the forecast doesn't look good except for Sunday they need at least one qualifying session to set the field. I think Thursday was their best shot and the fuel cars are what most come to see. Some don't like it but facts are facts......
And I like sportsman category just incase you were wondering. But I have yet to hear anybody say I can’t wait to hear the sound of an open header car or the smell of race gas signifying the start of the Full Throttle season have you?

What you may not realize is not only is there a curfew as to how late they can run fuel cars, but there is also a set time in which they can START running them too. (And I mean down the track, not warm ups.) Since there are schools in the area, they can't begin running on weekdays until after 2 or 2:30 pm.

Wonder what happens if the entire qualifying rain outs? Normally they go on the points to set the field. First race of the year they can't do that. Maybe they'll have a foot race to determine spots lol. I would think they'd have to push things back and get at least 1 session in

They need two runs to set the field. One run the top ten get in no matter what, the next six on qualifing times. That is unless someone the NHRA wants in doesn't make it. Then the policy manual (where ink never drys) gets changed to what they need. Next we here from Alan that the rule was there all the time or it was the right thing to do.

I should have said two runs to set the field and one run to fix it.
When did the rule change that the top ten got in and the next six on times if there was only one qualifying run? When did the rule change if there was a timing malfunction the run was thrown out?
Alan you work for NHRA and are great at what you do. Part of what you do is ride for to brand. No one could expect you to ever disagree with anything NHRA said or did in a forum like this.

The top ten-one run rule was changed at the end of the '07 season. And I will grant you that it has never come into effect since then so this was the first time many had known about it.
As far as I know the other issue is unprecedented, but I think the right decision was made. The right 16 cars are in the field. And the issue that caused the problem yesterday was found and fixed last night.
You are correct, I certainly wont come to a public forum and bash the company that I work for, but I also don't speak for them. When I'm here I'm offering my views not NHRA's. But often I have an insider view that most here don't I love a good dicussion or debate, but you're debating with me, not NHRA.

I would have to disagree with unprecedented. There have been really good runs in the past that have not counted due to timing malfunctions (cones hit, hot dog wrappers, spiders, wiring shorts).
I do agree they got it right. I think it would have been better if they had thrown the whole round out and ran a round this monring.

They discussed this on the TV show. It was decided not to stop and fix it because of the threat of rain, esp. when ETs were apparently working fine. And the rule change to not completely toss all runs when the timing system messed up was made a couple of years back.
I think the result was reasonable. But as one who sat through three days of rain, paid for airfare and hotel and such, and saw only a round of qualifying, and 2/3rds of a round of pro racing, my beef is with Ma Nature, not NHRA...
