So how does a guy like Spencer Massey show up in Michigan as a team owner, and run so well that he gets to the Final with seemingly an underfunded operation and a part-time, inexperienced crew? This is - what - maybe the 3rd race with this car this year? And he didn't get lucky and back into the final either. He got there on performance.

We have many so-called Independent car owners who have been racing T/F or F/C for years. Terry Haddock has been out there for at least 20+ years. Yet these teams are usually luck to even qualify, let alone go a round like Terry did last weekend. Zizzo is an example of a guy who just races a few times a year, but shows up prepared and is always a threat to qualify well, and usually goes some rounds. But he is a rare exception.

So how did Spencer accomplish this? What is he doing that other part-time teams could learn from?

The answer is somewhat simple yet multifaceted - keep in mind Spencer purchased Bobby Jr. and Dom Lagana's Nitro Ninja complete. That included the "run book". It had all the best parts and was a good running competitive car wherever they ran it. Then add long time crew chief Scott Graham who is one of the "new" up and coming talents. Toss in what Spenser learned during his tenure at DSR on how to run the business side of it plus whatever he learned from Gene - Spencer knows the business side of things. Toss in the fact that some people feel he has gotten a raw deal from a few places, it's my understanding he may be getting a little help. Finally he's racing smart picking and choosing when and where to race to minimize is losses and maximize the results.
