While your comment might be true for a portion of the fans (the ones who leave the stand on Sunday after the fuel carts have run) I think attendance would definitely suffer if there was only TF and FC. I go to 9-10 National events per year and if they were just racing TF/FC I would probably go to 3 or 4. I'm not interested in spending a weekend of time, travel and $ to see two classes run.Bottom line is...
People are PAYING to see NITRO..............
If NHRA eliminated ALL classes except TF and FC the turnout at races would be the same
MM Pro Stocks ran mid to low 6.2's in the IHRA the last few years. What if Pro Stock had BIG motors? I watch the PDRA Pro/S and they are knocking on the door of a 3 second ET in the 1/8 mile with an 832 motor. That would translate to 6.20's in the 1/4 mile. On 2nd thought, they would become slow Pro Mods. Well, NHRA could do like P/S truck & move the class to Comp Elim........
Ken, all 24 next year? Find a backer and get bolted into a fuel car for 2018! All kidding aside, sounds like a very cool year ahead, good for you.
I don't believe cutting the races to 18 is the answer. The class is untouchable, unless you have mega-bucks for development to run with KB, Elite & Gray OR you simply rent horsepower for 100K a race (thats what it used to cost to rent back with Schmidt & Maskin, etc). I'm sure it cost more now.
I recently heard the 1.6m figure floated as the price to run the series, but not sure if that included an engine program.
Yup, loading up the truck and camper and off we go, we are in Ohio so we should get to stop home a few times during the season.
Also have family on Long Island so that will be a side trip on the east coast swing. Western swing should be a blast.
v. gaines quitting was a bad sign.....every watch him in pits and/or staging lanes? never seen a racer smile and joke more.
he has the dough too, why not stay in as an owner with a younger driver? he chose not to
Pinto.......The far lane car is a Div 3 car, looks like a Mopar, maybe a Duster. If someone could read the car number, might be a clue to who the other driver was. Photo was 1976.
Dang, Dude! You rock.
Schmidt was getting 6,000.00 per race & you got 5,000.00 for qualifying.Again it is a "sport" for ultra rich guys to play............and some of them have parked their cars due to costs.
Gray MS only came about from the sale of Grandpa's oil business netted 1.4 Billion if I remember right. John and Terrry split it
$700 million each.
I am not knocking them, they are generous people, but it takes BIG money, with a lot to waste.
Want to be a millionaire drag racing, start with 10 million, does not even hold true anymore start with 100 million.
