You are correct. I went back and checked, I was thinking that Doug was in the canopy car when he got together with Tony Stewart, but that was the open car.

The fact remains, both type of cars are fast and
Yeah, 2023, that’s what I said. Well, this weekend Kalitta cars were about 6-7 MPH ahead of everybody else. It wasn’t even a competition. Hell Langdon probably would’ve run a 3.62 or 3.60 flat on that 346 MPH run if he weren’t weaving all over the track.

Oh, and by the way, they run open canopy.

They can win, but open is clearly easier to tune and has an advantage, otherwise people wouldn’t be ditching their closed cockpit cars and going to open!

I never said closed cockpit cars couldn’t be competitive but they can’t run with the well-tuned open cockpit cars. This is especially obvious after the US 131 Michigan race. Kalitta cars are blowing everybody away. I know obviously the team and workmanship is a major factor, but they made the decision to stay with open cockpit. What does that tell you?
You know it’s bad when Clay almost dropped, what seemed like, an F bomb in his last video because he was so relieved and excited to have that car back and doing well.

I was at the race and I swear I saw Tony Stewart go 343 in a canopy car. Billy Torrence ran 341.

I'm sure Jim and John O were as frustrated as anyone else about their performance. They had to know that a change was possible. Like many before them a change happened. Not the first time a crew chief was replaced. In the NHRA world it's not a good idea to burn your bridges.
Yes to all you said, but open cockpit dominates. Look at the individual drivers’ and teams’ decisions, and it will absolutely support that fact.

JimO was my favorite. Humble, sweet guy! I’m sure his contract was up at Indy, which is why he’s not around anymore. I hate it, but I agree…. that’s racing! It was time for that team to go!

Yes, but the fact remains, but only a few teams know how to tune those canopy cars…it must be really hard. Open is easier, quicker and faster, weight being equal.

Clay said the open cockpit car they had was quite a bit lighter. I don’t know the number, but it was significant. And he weighs only 140 lb!

So what do crew chiefs do do to accommodate drivers of different weight? Clay is 140, others are 200 lb plus and that 60 lbs plus sits in the same place as are 23 lb canopy. The parts and pc's used, the design of the chassis and the experience and knowledge of the tuner have a whole lot more to do with the end performance of the car than a canopy or no canopy. AJ and Brian have been together for a long time, both are brilliant at tuning these car's and oh yeah, both cars have EVERYTHING they need to succeed.
