Craig Breedlove Dies - World Land Speed Record Legend Piloted 'Spirit of America'

Breedlove's first triumph was to reach 407.45 mph in 1963. Two years later, he was the first to exceed 600 mph. The legendary racer has died at age 86.

He was my teenage racing idol second only to Big Daddy. I remember seeing his pictures in Hot Rod magazine and thinking, wow, what would it be like to go that fast.

I didn’t have many idols growing up, but Craig was one of them.
Kind of eerie that the “Spirit of America” has died , given our current times…..
