Resurrect OCIR and put it at the El Toro Air Base (1 Viewer)

The Irvine Corp. wanted the land at and around OCIR to build a big industrial park. They had quite a surprise though, when they found out the water table was so high that they could only build one story buildings. OCIR's revenge!

If you're referring to the "riot" during a Fox Hunt, I don't remember anyone being killed and I was stuck in the tower until 3am. Every window in the tower was broken and my son was hiding under his father's desk. Quite scary and totally out of hand.

When was this Riot everyone talks about, and what caused it?

Gee, I don't remember when the 'riot' occured. I'm not too good with dates, unlike racers who can remember every e.t. they ever ran! I suppose one or two years before the track closed. As I said, it was a "Fox Hunt" where all the girls got in free and the stands were also full of drunk Marines from the base. There were also a couple of bands (big mistake), which in the minds of the drunks took too long to get set up and the natives got restless. I think the first thing was someone trying to tear down the cover over the water boxes at the starting line. When the crew went out to stop them, things went from bad to worse. The crowd started throwing rocks & things at the tower, breaking every window on all three levels and also set fire to the back fence. The police and fire trucks didn't even want to come in the gate! My son & I finally got escorted out the back door to my car and got the heck out of there. So much for that bright idea!!

Pat, I believe that is the riot (for lack of a better term) I was thinking of. But if the cops didn't want to come in it had to be pretty bad.

In an article I read about OCIR it sited a young spectator being killed in a non racing incident that soured the Irvine Company during the OCIR Doner days. But you were there and if it didn't happen that's good.

A person was hit in the head with a bottle and the death was announced the following day.

You will NEVER get a race track of any kind built at the current location. Way too many high dollar homes in the surrounding areas. All the doctors, lawyers, etc would never allow this anywhere near their homes.

Plus, something I just thought of, the Irvine Company owns a huge chunk of that area...many thousand acres....and we know they already are fond of drag racing! I think that's probably a lost cause.

I'm sure that incident indirectly had something to do with the track closing! Neighbors probably considered the track a public nuisance!
