I first saw this car myself, Nov. 1969 @ an Irwindale 64+ Funny Car Show...

This is an Awesome Photo.. Brings back some nice memories.

( Looking back through some photos and stuff I've saved through the years, this race was on Nov. 23rd '69,
Thanksgiving weekend almost to the day, 40 Years Ago, and this sport / hobby / business is still my passion. Wow!)

That might be a Big Bob Snyder or Mike Ditty photo..

My favorite is the Red stardust cuda...

My dad was the shop foreman for Ed Pink Racing Engines in Van Nuys back in the late 60's until 1977 when we moved.
I remember my dad telling this story several times. Ed had come up with a new engine combination and he, my dad, and one or two other guys from the shop plus Don's crew had a private test session at Orange County (if I remember right) that only these people knew about and nobody else!!
So they have the test, making some runs and what have you when the very next day a guy from the East Coast calls and asks my dad how the testing went, and my dads like wtf, how did you know. He told Don about it, and Don said, "the three fastest forms of communication is telephone-tell a racer-and tell a woman!!

Great shots of the early Stardust cars. Shoe, we need more stories, stop acting like you're busy...:D

I belive that '67 'CUDA was Butch Leal's last funny car. He said he sold that car to Shoe. He went back to Super Stock racing after that. Butch spent a lot of time in our pits at the Calif. hot rod reunion, even setting up a table to sell t-shirts and die cast cars. Lots of good stories, we both had new 409 Chevys and went to MoPars.

Ok, this is going to make me feel old. But as a former crew guy I can remember staying in a house in Justice, Ill (I think that was it) around 1974-75 that was shared by Schumacher and Chi-town crew and drivers.

Might have been Austins house. He lived on Roberts road in Justice. The Minicks lived in Stickney most I can remember. But There are at LEAST 2 gentleman that visit this site that can verify the whats and where's. Even if they were in diapers at the time :D

Your close Dan, Coil had an apartment in Justice off of 88th Ave about that time, then moved to 95th and Roberts Rd in Hickory Hills and was there till he went to work for Force in 85. My Dad and I have lived in Justice since 69. We have never lived in Stickney.

All I can remember for Coils shop was a large (About 4ft) piece of Titanium that he experimented with. He was burning pistons and thought if he domed the pistons with Titanium they wouldn't burn. Tried it! Blew the motor to pieces, but the top of the pistons looked brand new. The motor just found another more expensive way to expire. Back to the drawing board. BTW the shop was in back of a house and there was an alley were we parked the hauler back there also.

...into Chi-town for Nitro. It was on Archer ave. ... the RATS in the alley were as big as cats...
That sounds like Lee Austin's place.
He had a friend in the industrial chemical business that would sell him bootleg Nitro for about half of what Commercial Solvents
was getting from the racers. It was clear instead of the yellow tint. Lee took care of the UDRA guys...;)

Jerry; Your right that was the name I was trying to remember.

Thanks

The Shumakers are definitely class acts. These posts reminded me that I need to buy a new bigger battery charger for my shop-ya know what brand I'll be buyin! Good Luck to the US Army T/F team this weekend.Shapin' up to be a battle to the end, huh?

Have 2 of the chargers in my shop now. Had one for years that finally died--was even run over by the fork lift once. We straightened her out and she ran another 5 years!!!!!!!! Sams club has a heck of a deal on them.
