Qualifying positions (1 Viewer)

Okay, lets see if we get the old key boards fired up. In a drag race, the winner ( for this discussion lets leave all other infractions out of the mix) is not only who has the best crew chief, ( elapse time E.T. ) but also the best driver ( reaction time RT). So the question is why not use the combination of ET and RT in qualifying and have a new designation total time TT and use that for qualifying positions.. In todays set up the drivers reaction time is not a factor in a qualifying position.

Would this give you a truer view of the car and driver skills?

And please remember this is just to get you thinking, so do not shot the messenger.

You should check out IHRA rod classes. We have a program for it allready and IHRA uses it in the ROD classes its called package qualifing.

My first thought is, why fix something that isn't broke? Such a change would be like requiring Cup qualifying to be done with all of the cars on the track so drivers could be displaying their ability to drive in traffic.

As Jeff has pointed out, they do package qualifying in the Rod classes in the IHRA, but it isn't qualifying in the traditional sense (knowing who you will face via a qualifying ladder). The better packages get lane choice in random pairings, but that's it.

The term TT is already used and has been since the beginnings of the sport... Top Time as in 'who ran top time', another carry over from the dry lakes days meaning top speed of the meet.

but lets see.
in qualifying you stage as shallow as you can, which kills your RT but helps your ET... or you can deep stage, which will help your RT, but knocks some (a lot) off your ET.

I don't see what RT has to do with qualifying, and if you roll it into qualifying, it would hurt Wilkerson big time, he cuts lights on par with Ashley.

Like Karl mentioned many stage very shallow in qualifying, so the rt times are not as accurate.

Also others use it as practice to press the tree and work on that. Some have sat for a moment when the light turns green. Capt Koas used to do this all the time, not sure if he still does since the wreck with Allen

Robert said in his blog this morning, AFTER they are in the show, then he uses the rest of his passes to nail the tree.
