Pro Stock Question

If you built, own, develop and maintain it 1350+...on your own Dyno...and the + depends on the Dyno.

If you are leasing it, it is the number one qualifier and makes well over 1500...:D

And it only matters if you are racing Dyno's...

I'm just say'in...;)

Merry Christmas...

mentions camaro body coming early in season.
have not heard that GM is really putting much effort, much less money
into pro stock or funny car lately?, and it's well documented GM guys have been
running out-of-production pontiacs..... who is paying for the emergence
of the camaro body style into NHRA PS?
and the cobalt? still a viable option? or will those users also be pushed
into the camaros?

If you asked me the last I remember Of GM really being into it was:

1. Before Fred Simmons was let go
2. I can't remember GM being behind any FC team after 2003 with Jim Epler and the 35th Ann. Camaro body and/or Don Prudhomme's Skoal program or 02/03.
3. Right before ACDelco and GM had to leave the Johnson's.

I don't know if the goverment gave the big 3 any rules on sponsorship and related.

Just downloaded the 2012 Rulebook. It states a cutoff date of 2007 for body styles, or 5 years. If they stay consistant with that, the Cobalt and the Pontiacs are good for another 3 years. (Both ceased production in 2010.)

For me, the key phrase is "Reserved for 2007 or later NHRA-accepted 2-door or 4-door coupe or sedan (domestic or foreign.) production vehicles."

It would not surprise me if NHRA decided to force the issue and rule them inelegible.

I thought Rick Jones was responsible for bringing the Camaro back to P/S. The only team currently running a Cobalt that might get any pressure to switch would be Cagnazzi. I don't see GM giving Dave River, Steve Spiess, Steve Schmidt, or Kevin Lawrence any incentive to switch over. The last production year for the Cobalt was 2010.

GM's last F/C involvement was with Tony Pedregon, not that it amounted to much. I don't think the gov't has anything preventing the big 3 from sponsoring a race team or teams. Ford never stopped supporting JFR, and Mopar didn't leave Allen Johnson when all the bailout mess happened. GM is back into IndyCars, so any chance of drag racing teams getting help is pretty much out the window. BTW, Jim Epler ran the 35th Anniversary Camaro at the 2001 U.S. Nationals. I was there, even have pics, somewhere.

thanks keith - somehow though there's got to be pressure from somewhere
to get those championship summit cars away from the GXP and into something
currently in production; i wouldn't expect one mfg'r. and/or one team to
eat all those costs??......i agree, cagnazzi may also be in line for a switch?

You got me by 2 years on Epler. You are correct. I did not know that about GM, it seems like they don't want to come back into drag racing. I'm surprised because there just letting Ford and Mopar dominate the FC brand pools and all there is is an Impala only about 10 teams use. At the very least they should be back with factory support to an FC team with a Camaro body, the Camaro body would be the right car to compete against Mustang's, Solara's, and Charger's.

I'm certain GM would love to see all those GXPs turn into Camaros, and I'm sure if GM would throw a few bucks out there we'd see a swarm of them. Sorta like when Oldsmobile left and Pontiac arrived.

I don't think it's a matter of GM not wanting to come back, but rather priorities and ROI. IndyCar is a much bigger draw than NHRA, so it's a no brainer from that perspective. However, GM just debuted a concept COPO Camaro to take on Ford and Dodge in Stock and maybe Super Stock. To me, this represents GM getting back to the grassroots level of drag racing. Mustangs, Camaros, and Challengers should be a staple of P/S and F/C racing today, sorry but a Toyota F/C doesn't move me. The Impala is out there, but 10 teams is stretching it, T.Ped?, Jim Dunn, Bode?, and Creasy. The Monte is/was being used by Diehl and Paul Smith Racing
