Points Races

We'll I guess I will begin to introduce myself as Steve Bullard, NOT a real drag racing fan, even though all the evidence points to the contrary. :)

REAL Drag Racing Fans are Tired of the Fabricated BS Called the Countdown with points reset and all the other horsepucky.....

Hmm, not sure I agree with this statement. I am a "Real" drag racing fan and I have learned to embrace change. I have seen countless times in the business world that older individuals who get into a comfort zone have a hard time accepting change even though it is for the best long term and I think this is the case for the diehards who are against the Countdown, 1,000 ft racing, top 12 qualifying, etc. I love the Countdown and what it brings to the sport.

Right cuz New Coke was a winning idea :) lol

anyway, Hey Now, I'm think I'm younger than you....or at least pretty close.

Actually I get the idea behind it and with tweaks I think it could work better.

I just don't embrace the idea that playoffs are great for football, basketball, or baseball and have no place in racing. The ladies or gents that won championships under the old year long format won those championships based upon the rules laid out at the beginning of the season. The rules have been laid out, and everyone knows what they must do to be champ at Pomona 2 (with the exception of Pro Stock Bike :D ) I have no problem saying whomever wins the most events is the champ, or keep the old Winston Points system, or let's do the Countdown. Let's just go racing. On Sunday teams wake up wanting to win the event. The rest takes care of itself.

There is no BCS formula in drag racing, no college football writers submitting votes who can't watch the games, or some formal panel chosing a champ at the end of the season. It's head to head get after it, get to the line first and you'll be the champ.

Did you pay attention to the post I was replying to? The "REAL" was Wentworth's, not mine...

I just don't feel the play off cars should be mixed with none play-off car... 8 quickest play off cars on one side of the ladder, then the open field on the other half... including the 9th & 10th points cars if they are quick enough...

I could care less if we went to 660 foot racing or a fifth mile... as far as the "Chicago Summer Day Rule" (12 only carry over) aka "opps, the top three in points are gonna DNQ because we've got a one lane track" CHIT happens,TANSTAAFL, the moon is a harsh mistress... in plain English; you blew it, you don't get to play this week, you saw the same track as everyone else...

rambling on...

I consider myself a "real" fan because I read a lot of available information and watch available TV programing in addition to attending NHRA events in person. Been doing it for over fourty years.

Do I wish some aspects of it would not have changed? Absoulutely.

But I still enjoy it. NHRA racing is not perfect, but it is still the best option out there for me.

Come on brother :) 250pt lead would be epic. 100 with 4 to go is nothing. A first rd "L" coupled with a Win by 2nd or 3rd place man and this is a tight one. There is a lot of Nitro left to burn in FC.

Really, that is only 5 rounds with what 4 races left? I bet Capps is a Nervous wreck!

Joe, brother I've been waiting for 15yrs for a championship by the graduate of Santa Clara University, the grizzled vet Ron Capps. We're talking Cope Camaro Z28 days! Diehard Capps fans are tossing and turning at night too :)

Well this is the best car he has had since '98! So unless he stumbles early these next two races, he should have his trophy!

While I like the march of the season long fight for the title,I can live with a playoff, it it were an actual playoff. In other sports the best team doesn't always win but at least they had to beat other championship teams to get there.

With the countdown, the non Cdown and Cdown cars are mixed in and have too big on an impact. The year Tony P won, he only had to beat Cdown cars twice, he kept beating up on non countdown cars. Thats my big issue with it.

When the baseball playoffs starts teams like the Yankees, Tiger and Rangers will have to battle each other. The Royals and Indians don't get to play.

8 countdown cars on one side of the ladder, 8 open of the other. The two sides don't race until the final and then it could even be for money only no points, that would have avoid any team issues

PJ and the countdown...oh my what ever shall we do!
.
I know...we need Anti-Countdown Man!

Halfway through and Ron has given some of the lead back to his teammate. The only non DSR car with a legitimate shot at this point is Neff and he is 5 rounds out with 12 rounds to go so he will need some help to get back into it at this point. TF looks like the 3 DSR cars are in the best position with Langdon over 4 rounds out and Bernstein 6 rounds out. PS AJ extended his lead by another 20 points and Line will need some help now with only 12 rounds remaining. PSB appears to between the two Harley's as the Hectors once again had the best bikes all through qualifying only to lose that advantage on race day and Hector JR is over 5 rounds out. So far so good, we are building towards another exciting finish.

With 1 to go the FC race is the one that will likely go down to which team goes further in Pomona and it's between the 2 DSR cars. TF is down to the 3 DSR cars with only a remote shot for Tony and Spencer. PS and PSM are over and will be wrapped up after qualifying. Been a pretty exciting Countdown this year and I love seeing a new champion like Allen Johnson, Antron (assuming he closes it out), and Capps/Beckman.

This is great stuff! Yep, I've got a favorite for sure. But this is "high drama" FC and TF.

Drama being the keyword....

the rest of this is not aimed at you Steve, it's cool you enjoy it the way it is.

I simply can't. I was witness to a true last race championship being decided, and it meant a lot because that's the way it happened....not the way it was groomed to happen
A championship clinched at the 17th race of the year is no less a champion than someone clinching it in the last race....some would say more dominating....it's just not as dramatic as television likes it to be. What makes the people in Pomona any more special than let's say, Maple Grove? If Maple Grove sees a champion being crowned, do the people in Pomona cancel their Drag Racing plans? If they do cancel, they are what LA has been accused of before....loving a winner. I say, true fans will go see the Drag Racing because it's a national event (like someone mentioned here already)....since when has a premier event been considered just a race unless a championship is in the balance? Strange days man....strange days....

Does Anti-Countdown Man have a signal flare or something, how can we citizens contact him?
