Oh, and I most likely wouldn't wear a bikini to a race because my assets sunburn very easily and I have yet to find one that I would trust the top to stay in place for very long.

:) I say wear the bikini anways! We guys will divert our eyes and cameras when the inevitable happens! ;)

I find the ricers interesting, the technology on the fast front wheel drive stuff is fascinating. I think part of the downhill slide is the fact as with any heads-up competition the cars always get faster and that means more expensive. In the import racing that happened quite quickly. Pro Street is like that too.

And I don't get why NHRA decided to separate them from the mainstream. Why would they want to turn off a whole bunch of potential fans of the sport just because it's a little different?

I think it'd be cool to have some demo runs at nat'l events -- like they do with nitro harleys or pro-mod. Maybe it'd get some more folks under 50 in the stands :)

Well me for one, I wouldn't let my 13 yr old granddaughter walk to the hot dog stand alone at one of the Import events I've been at.. Maybe I'm a little TOO over protective?

As for NHRA having them (FWD) put on an exhibition, ... no way because of time... I have never seen more then 2 or 3 pair of Imports go down the track without one breaking or an oilldown...

On the up side of Import racing, about 4 or 5 yrs ago when it was at its peak, I had a 1989 4 door Honda Civic station car with over 100,000 miles on it & a lot of body rust etc... It would run 19.70 @ 68 mph DEAD NUTS every time it was automatic, & I'd start in 2nd gear to keep it as slow as I could..

When I went to race in the $1000 payout Import race I wouldn't even take my helmet.. I'd rent one to look like a total "DORK" (BTW I'm over 60 yrs old) Usually during time shots I'd make it a point to stage with my rear wheels and have the starter back me up... & I would get a kick out of the hot shots laughing at me.. some of then even had NO2 on their Civics.. LOL

Well when eliminations started I'd watch them count how many cars back I was so that could "Get The Duck" :)

They were dialed around 15 to 16 sec I was close to 20 sec dial... I'd stage DEEP cut a "SAFE" light (.050) and watch ... some times I'd see my win light come on when they couldn't wait 4 sec.. or I'd be passing the 1000' and see they were only at 1/2 track (either late or spinning) I won enough $$ in that yr to pay for that Honda 5 times over :D

So in a way I miss Import racing, The Honda has been replaced by a Chevy Caviler so I still CAN race in Sport Compact class.. but I just cant deal with that type of people now... all the oil downs, the revving of engines constantly in the staging lanes...

Can someone puleeeeezzzz tell me WHY they have to rev them incessantly over and over while in the staging lanes... and have the SUPER BOOM Box blasting (ya cant hear anything except the boom, boom, boom, thumping, & the rotary engines ringadingding over and over..

Well the $$ was good while it lasted but now I'm an "Old Fart" so I just race Real Street, or my Vette in the Corvette Challenge at E Town...

Ok, we need a "Who jacked my thread" smiley!:p Seriously, I didn't post this to start an economic war, just to ask what happened to Sport compact racing? I'd like to hear from a SC champion as to why that genre has faded away. That all!

The sport has faded a little because of NHRA and NOPI teamsed up. Now there is NOPI/NHRA dna BOTI (battle of the imports).

Racers are split on where to go, and what is best for there budget. Some races are all east coast and some are spread out over the states.

Many people can see that gas prices are going up and it cost a lot of money to even get to the track.

We (titan motorsports) where going to go to NOPI/NHRA races this year but at the start of the year when the rule book came out months late, yes months late. We where told it would say something for rules, but they did not change anything that would help some of the teams to save money or beneficial for the sport. We then said we are not going to race there this year and focus 100% on ADRL.

What people need to understand that sport compact is great for drag racing, it brings the kids that are into imports something to do and get into.
I think the reason why it is died off is because the sport got to fast to quick and when that happens that means it cost a lot of money to stay up with the pack and that scares people away.

When we first started racing in PRO RWD in 2004 the class was running 6.90's or so. Well by the end of the year we where running high 6.50's that is a big jump in e/t.

Also just because drag racing is not doing so well in the sactioning bodies does not mean that people with the cars are still not buying parts. Parts sales keep going up for sport compacts.

Thanks Baadal, I've had a change of heart when it comes to SC racing, anyone who's not impressed with the performance of some of those cars is pretty naive IMO! But the fact that the SC genre brings in more of the under 25 crowd to NHRA races can't be a bad thing IMO. I still think NHRA should bring a pair of Pro RWD-FWD cars to some of the bigger races for exhibition.

I have to say that Im honestly quite offended by many of your posts and rude comments about sport compact racing. Not everyone who is in sport compact racing is a rice burner, I dont know how many times people have to tell you that. Im just as much into sport compact racing as you are into domestic drag racing. Dont get me wrong, I love Powerade events and all types of drag racing and follow Powerade religiously but if you even knew half of the people that are in the sport compact industry you'd see they are just like many of the crew members, drivers etc from other forms of drag racing...not the people that your describing so before many of you come out here bashing the PEOPLE in the sport compact industry...come out to a few races and see what it has to offer.
The payouts are not as great as other events but I guess that just shows you how much it means for people to come out and do this...they are in it because they love it, not the make money like some other people elsewhere.

And BTW...your thread is in the wrong spot...NHRA packed up their $h%* and left us high and dry a long time ago...

May I ask exactly who you are referring to?

I admit I'm NOT a fan of SC racing... however you do have a very valid point.. whenever the TV camera's go to ANY SC event they might show 10 sec of honest hard working "Real Racers" and 3 FULL MIN of "Hip Hoppers" or "Gansta Boyz" flipping the gang sign, you know the usual hat on sideways pants around their azzz etc....Its that thing thats gives SC the image of trouble, and keeps family's from going (unless its a SC racer)

I also will admit I DON'T like the look and actions of the Gansta look, but I have met and spoken to some of them at length, and they surprised the hell out of me and spoke civilly and acted like a i.e. "Normal" person (whatever that means) :)

IMHO, Joe, your opinions weren't offensive. The person who sorta derailed the thread gets my vote.....
BTW, sport compact racing is a really good trainging ground for a lot of these guys. Justin Humphries comes to mind. He seems to be doing okay in Pro Stock. Bob Glidden mentioned in a interview that he's one of the best drivers.
Anyway, just cause we race sport compacts (I guess that VW's could very well be one of the original sport compacts...), doesn't mean that we're "ricers".

As usual I have to come on here and offer my rebuttal on what someone's opinion of Sport Compact Racing is really all about.

First of all, I'm a 33 year old father of 3 who races a Mitsubishi. I've been to college and majored in English. You can look at any of my posts and see that there are no mis-spelled words and my English is proper most of the time. I don't have any earrings or tattoos. I NEVER say the word "dude". I can't STAND to see these idiots with their pants hanging down on the ground. I don't even know what gang signs look like. I have been guilty of wearing my hat in different directions at times, but I hardly think that makes me the "horrible hip hopper" some of you make us all out to be. There are quite a few professional teams out there that carry and maintain serious and professional attitudes when it comes to racing. Titan, CSI Racing, Gary Gardella Racing, Kenny Tran Racing....those are just a few.

I am one of the people (critics) who in the past have stated that Sport Compact is not a series that should sit by itself because the racing by itself is not enough to carry a fanbase. There always had to be something else (drifting, booby girls, whatever) to keep the fans interested. Things have slowed down since the inception of the NHRA/NOPI combo. The weather hasn't helped, with almost every event this season being rained on at some point. I could talk forever about the economy and fuel prices, but we all know that. Despite the economic downturn we're all facing, the Sport Compact market is still big for the true racer who buys parts from the big manufacturing companies.

Ask yourselves this question: Would you rather see these fartcan wielding, airplane wing having, stupid car looking idiots out there on the streets running down your child as he/she is crossing the street? Or would you rather have them supporting your local track (which you ALL keep saying we need to do) and keeping their "racing" off the streets? The choice for me is obvious. What's so wrong with racing something that's not rear wheel drive and not a V-8? Who are we really hurting by doing this? There are a few boo boos out there who dress/act/look like the miscreants described in earlier posts, but is that a reason to judge ALL of us and categorize us all as such???? How about talking to a few of us if you're ever in the pits and seeing what we're about before passing judgment?

End of defense for now......

By the way, to the poster who mentioned Competition Eliminator DD/AT class earlier: We plan on debuting a DD/AT car before the season's over, so we'll be rear wheel drive, just not a V-8!

I'm going to admit something here. When people do it right, sport compacts can be cool to watch and you have to admit 1,000hp out of 4 or 6 cylinders is impressive. I'm still not a fan of front drive, though. When I say "do it right" by the way it means going beyond just putting a fart cannon exhaust and Type-R stickers on a 100hp Civic DX. And it's not just import guys. I'd also call out anyone who thinks he's cool by putting an SS badge on a V6 Camaro or an SRT sticker on a Charger SE.

Now for people who think I'm way off base on my comments earlier, EVERY time I tuned in for a sport compact event the stands were always only 1/4 full. Yet the bikini contests never had an issue with lack of crowds. And if that ridiculous wheelie bar on the back of front drive Hondas serves other purposes than being a wheelie bar, I'd like to know!

You can look at any of my posts and see that there are no mis-spelled words and my English is proper most of the time.

Except you misspelled "misspelled". (ducking for cover) :)

Your points are excellent -- how can people drag racing, in whatever they choose, be a bad thing? And as you note, I'd rather having these folks on a strip than on the street.

Some weird threads on the Mater this weekend.

Just because some of you don't like SC racing, why come on here and throw them under the bus? I don't understand all the negativity floating around these days.

SC drag racing was going along fine until this thing called drifting came over from Japan and then that was the next big thing ... some drivers, fans and sponsors went that way and suddenly the import market was divided. IMO, they should have both events together and make one series.

Definitely keep the bikini contests though. :D

They got tired of constantly replacing snapped axles and other parts on those 4 cylinder pieces of cr*p.

If they didn't have those bikini contests there would probably be 10 people in the stands.

BTW it's always comical to see one of those front-drive Hondas with the big wheelie bar. Just as comical as the gangsta-rap blasting punk who thinks by putting on crazy-sized rims, dragster wing and a fart cannon exhaust on his Honda, he has himself a hot rod.

Sales must be down on fart pipes and neon lights.

thank god...thats great news. only good thing about nopi speed tv was charity hodges! lololol........send the rice burnin fwd cars back to china!

This is just to name a few of the comments just from this thread...

Alot of people have this idea of sport compact racers mainly because that is how the media portrays them...I ask you to take one hard look at this issue. How does the media sterotype drag racing in general? Theres many threads on here where people are so mad because the way the media has made us look...and those of us in the sport know thats not true...the same goes for sport compact racing.

I surely didn't start this thread for it to be bash Sport compacts, simply out of curiosity as to the status of the class. I'm sorry mikaela if thats what it turned into...
