NHRA open to 1/8 mile? (6 Viewers)

Right where I live is one of the top ranked automotive technology programs in the country, Southern IL University- Carbondale. I got an associate's degree there in another century, they also have a bachelor degree program now too. They also have one of the top aviation technology programs in the country.
Go Salukis!

Pretty sure the decline of MLB is due more to the fact young boys simply aren't playing it and interested in it, rather than changes to the game, which really haven't been very much overall. And the increase of popularity of football (pro and college). Biggest changes in MLB were 1. The DH, but only in the American League for most of its life; 2. Turf 3. Playoff expansion, which I think was detrimental, and 4.Now it's the pitch clock, which from my understanding nearly everyone prefers.

American culture changed too, speeding up as it is regarding time, and baseball games simply got longer and longer. Plus the strikes, PEDs, limiting starting pitchers on pitch counts, etc. Frankly, the linch pin for me was the one All Star Game that ended in a tie because of the fear of a starting pitcher going more than one inning and they ran out of players (thank you Joe Torre, you jerk).
The biggest thing that hurt MLB was removal from broadcast TV, though

Five years from now the majority of television broadcasting will be PPV streaming. We don't get Monday night or Thursday night football here any more on broadcast TV. You gotta sign up for Hulu, Netflix, Prime, Peacock, Paramount Plus and a host of others to watch shows that 5 years ago were on network television.

True, MLB became very protectionist, to their detriment. And the massive cutbacks in the minor leagues, further reducing markets.

I grew up loving, absolutely loving baseball. Gotta do a report in school? I always went with something baseball when I could. But now, after the strikes, the stupid rules (Buster Posey), sabremetrics (inc pitch counts), ESPN, terrible announcers, PEDs, etc., I walked away a few years ago. Today it's an afterthought.

Carl's point about PPV is coming true too. Had a prof in college who years ago said the Super Bowl would be PPV one day. Hasn't got there yet surprisingly. Guess we'll have to go back to the radio when we can.

I grew up in the 60's and game of the week was the only one shown on Saturday and it was usually the Yankees. My Dad and I listened to almost every Astros game on radio and we went to many local games for college and semi-pro ball. In the 80's I followed Atlanta and the Cubs as there was a game almost every day. Now I couldn't name 10 pro players but I did start following NHRA again!

WTBS and WGN. No more games on those channels :( Same for WPIX in NY, NESN in Boston, etc.

I-Guys are live on YT to the eighth mile. For me, this is the litmus test

So far, its over way too quick, but not seeing anyone blowing the tires off- that's a bonus.

The "I-Guys" you tube broadcast was one of the best for drag racing that I have ever seen. Good interviews and lots of racing.
If the races only went a little further down track it would be great. I understand Galot is too short a track for that.

well, what are they going to teach them? how to hook up a scanner? todays cars are to complex to teach a bunch of kids much in a semester or even a year.
Duane, you have to start somewhere. I wouldn't be involved in drag racing if my Dad hadn't taken me to Oswego Drag Strip in 1974. Also he showed me how to work on my own bicycle at 7 years old. That is the foundation to where I am today.

IMO it is not the product, it is the consumer. Kids today have minimal interest in cars, really there are no cars left now. Previously they had 3 maybe 4 that were even remotely "cool". Even with me loving the sport and racing I could not get my kids interested, same with my BIL's kids.

Mid 60's to mid 70's cars were a way of life, freedom, building tinkering. There were so many brands and models to chose from.
Kids today do not even want to get their licenses, never mind build or work on a car.

The truth is the diehard racers, spectators are 50+ the older ones are dying off and very few are being replaced by young enthusiasts. The world is changing and not many want to spend a full day to watch cars they are not interested in then add on top of that the down time between rounds and they rather go do other things. Yes some come out once a year to watch the nitro circus but once they leave the show they do not even think about a car again until the show comes back.

If they are interested how many can afford to buy a late model then have the money to mod it which take a degree in engineering and computer science to just make the thing run. We could buy a car for a few hundred add parts cheap and go fast never leaving the driveway.

The up and coming have little interest in racing cars or cars in general.
Yes, there are less of them are interested in cars, but that is society in general, so it would only be natural. If your Dad is not into cars or you don't have that neighbor or friend that is into them, then chances are you aren't going to be interested.

What I will say, at times we sell these young adults/kids/teens short. I am constantly flattered by the number of young adults who take pictures and videos of my ZR1. Some stop and ask questions. I've even had some ask if they could sit in it. I'm always very accommodating. Sometimes I park in our pit space, and our car owner Tony Zizzo thinks it's amazing how many kids will walk past the top fuel car and look at the ZR1.

I like to attend Cars & Coffee events and some exotic car shows. There are always young enthusiasts at these events.
