“There has never been a rule against it, and I will give you an example of parity just in other forms of NHRA racing,” said Gray, who was hired by NHRA in July of 2008. “With some of your big Top Fuel and Funny Car teams they make some of their own parts, like maybe a supercharger or cylinder heads or some things of that nature. They don’t make those parts available to other people either. It is not unique to just Pro Stock Motorcycle, and there has never been anything in the rulebook against it. (There is not a rule) that says you have to make parts available to everybody not since I have been here (at NHRA).”

Glen Gray's explanation is pure lip service. All nitro cars are required to run roots type blowers and 2 valve heads. Are there any nitro teams out there allowed to run 4 valve heads, or a screw type blower??? Absolutely not!

If one team was allowed to exclusively run those parts and not make them available to other teams, THEN this explanation would be comparable.

There is one person out there that has the power to fix this situation. If Forest Lucus said that he wanted the Arana team to run Harley's, or he's pulling his $$$ out of NHRA, you can bet that they would all of a sudden be allowed to run them.

Since Buell no longer exists, this ruling means that it is not possible for the Buell to ever have a four valve DOHC motor. This ruling basically ends the possibility of the Buells ever being competitive with H-D. And I imagine V-H will keep Andrew's motor detuned enough so that their will be the illusion of competition, or maybe they will detune Eddie's motor some weeks and tune up Andrew's those week. One of the advantages of EFI is how easy it is to change the tuneup. NHRA's rule of allowing H-D to be exclusive to V-H is making a joke out the PSM class to anyone who has a brain in their head.

EXACTLY.

Wonder how dominant the Harleys will be the rest of the "regular season"?
Wouldn't it be something if the Buells ended up running 6-7 hundreths quicker than the Harleys this year, NHRA would add 20 lbs to the Buells just before the countdown.

Maybe someone should tell Harley to aprove more H-D motorcycles.

If Bryce built one and Harley aproved it, would it not be legal?

tb

If Shumacher built a viper body for his FC's and Dodge did not aprove it would it still be legal? I do not know.

What we don't know is what the agreement between V-H and H-D is. Who knows, maybe V-H spent all the money and got an deal from H-D to be the exclusive users of the Harleys?

Reading this story has caused me to realize that I misunderstood the rule regarding the exclusivity of the Harleys. I was basing my opinions on that misunderstanding. I now wish more than ever that I had just stayed out of it.

Always go with your first instinct Alan....it's usually the correct one (at least in my case it is)! :D

I can understand why you'd feel that way, Alan. It's hard to make a point successfully when you have a failure to understand the concepts involved.

The NHRA spokesperson who responded to the problem obviously has no understanding of the significant engineering differences in the various 2-valve vs. 4-valve systems, from what he said.

I don't know whether ANYONE in the higher eschelons of NHRA (with the exception of Graham Light) is cognizant these concepts to the extent that they fully understand what is going on here.

If they don't understand, they need to be educated to that end, and if they DO understand, shame on them for allowing this to continue.

I've only been trying to explain that to you for the past 9 months or more. Some of us aren't as clueless as you think we are.

Don't worry-all of us have said and written things we wish we could have back.

Its simple 2 solve this and nobody has 2 spend any money... The current harleys ( 4 valves overhead cams) take that motor away... Make them pull out there old harleys ( 2 valves and pushrods) and run them.. That motor is the same as the buell motor..They won the 08 championship with that motor and bike and stored it in the corner... Thats the fair thing to do... Then if they are bad ass then so be it... we are all on the same motor combo just a different make...Matt Smith

I was at a loss of understanding when NHRA approved the 4 valve more and I am even more confused with NHRA when they denied the new suzuki motor. The entire interviews lacks the feeling that they went parity and care if it's an even playing field. They need a better answer. I don't need to read a robot using the rulebook to answer questions. The most you will get is the NHRA to play with weight because outside of that, they obviously dont see a problem in this class.

Maybe it's just me, but NHRA's press release looks like it's still dodging the main question that everyone is asking - Why the HD Factory Team are still allowed the 4 Valve, instead of being asked to revert back to the 2 valve......20 pound weight increase is one small band-aid IMO.

That said, being an Aussie who follows the NHRA broadcasts, this is the most interested I've been in Pro Bike for a while - the burndowns, rivalries and controversy are all starting to become quite real!!
