New TV Voice of the NHRA

Well cool! Mr. Page does have a great voice. Arguably better than Marty or Mike. I'm talking voice and absolutely nothing else. NHRA needs Fry and Reinhart where they are, IMHO. Mr. Kernan would be interesting at that position though; his voice is also great. I think it's important for the person in that position to find a happy medium - a great voice, but not too emotional.... (a la' Brett Kepner), but keep it professional and be spot-on and accurate ... but not too stiff. Marty will be a good change.

I would like to see CompPlus do a follow-up to this story say, next March with Marty, to hear his thoughts on how the names & performance has changed since he's been gone, after he's done a few shows again.

Especially the last sentence!!!
:) :) :)

I'm sure Paul Page is a nice guy but after 6 years he still can't pronounce people's names correctly! Sure he's gotten better but when you show more enthusiasm for a hot dog eating contest, something is wrong.

This is a change for the better. And I actually like Marty Reid, if he's the one chosen I'll be glad he's back.

IMHO paul is fine. As long as mike is there and the racing is exciting who the hell cares. But if things need to change so be it. Marty is a good play by play man. Just wish they would get alan more involved. He is top notch.

Paul Page was great as an Indy car announcer, he was called the voice of the 500 for many years and rightly so. However his lack of knowledge of the sport and the ability (at least from my perspective) to even garner any knowledge showed during his on-air stents.

I'm sure some people will disagree with this thought, however I feel that Alan Reinhardt would be great choice to take Page's spot in the booth and a real breath of fresh air to the ESPN telecast. He has great knowledge of the sport, he has a great voice, and delivery, and would mesh very well with Mike Dunn.

Thoughts from Idaho.

I'm sorry, but the first person to have NEVER done that, please step forward. Heck I've looked at my own children and done that...

Grandchildren, yes... wife's ONCE... my three kids.... let's see, mouse, rat, and bug (k'dubs)... in-laws, let's not go there.... This is true TMI to file in my standard brain....

d'kid <- 'cause I forget my own name sometimes:o

I mentioned that Marty may be going back to NHRA to a bunch of NASCAR heads and they were all happy because Marty has sucked on NASCAR Broadcasts.

I hate to say it but I think the ratings slump is tied to other factors. I think Paul and Mike do a great job. There are a combination of issues to blame:
1. Every event usually has nearly the same outcome with the same players
2. The show is to long to sit though for most people
3. When the show starts in the afternoon on a sunny day whose watching?
4. No Sunday morning show to build on the results show later in the day
5. Not enough regional cars or underdogs to make it interesting

Why does anyone think Bob or Alan would leave the NHRA announcing team? They obviously enjoy what they do, and a weekend at the races is all that much better with them announcing. That said I do wish they would use Alan's top end interviews on the broadcasts.

Agree completely. Gary is a nice guy, but the only question he wants to ask is "how does it feel?". That question drives me nuts -- what answer is he expecting? What could people say that would be different or interesting? It's no different than asking people who've lost a child explain how they feel. "Unless you've experienced it you wouldn't understand." I'm dying for someone to say to Gary, "I dunno a Gary how does it feel to ask the same inane question every day of your life?", or better yet, "who are you, Dr. Phil?"

Alan is great, asks good technical questions when appropriate, gives people a little ribbing, and generally has fun. Let's people enjoy the moment, and helps them share it with us.

I couldn't agree more with your comments on Gary and Alan! I prefer to sit close to the tree when I'm at the track, so unfortunately Alan's interviews are usually drowned out by the next pair of cars coming to the line or doing their burnout.....hey, that's part of being at the track. However, when I'm at home and watching on TV, I would love to hear Alan's interviews!!

I think Gary's (and most all the team) interactions are to be blamed on the director/producer. They tend to want to dramatize EVERYthing. I can just hear them in Gary's ear...."ask her how it feels....don't forget to ask her how it feels".

I for one, would LOVE a whole crew of racers in the booth.

To ESPN and every stick in the mud "it's always been done this way" types, I think yes, it would seem like a trainwreck. To us that love this sport, it would be everything that made us love it in the first place. This was a greased hair, smokes rolled up in the t-shirt type of in your face Betty Crocker sport. It's lost it's edge. Here's to a more raucous, perhaps R rated show, but incredibly entertaining, and not a painfully PC homogenized pudding that's being served.

Dave McClelland is steeped in drag racing. Steve Evans had a way of knowing what to say, or to ask, to elicit the most informative and lively responses of anyone, ever. We've had the best any auto sport is ever likely to see. It's a tough act to follow.

Garlits was great behind a microphone. Not only could he do the job but he new what was going on and what he was seeing.
