New Pro Stocks

Was this an afford to save Pro Stock or to appeal to the car manufacturers so that they look somewhat like a street version of their cars and why they should support drag racing?

The old win on Sunday and sell cars on Monday idea.

In about 17 days we're going to be in the calendar year 2016, find a brand new 2016 model year car, boat, truck, rv, lawnmower, weed wacker, snow blower, or leaf blower that has a carburetor. People complain that Pro Stock isn't stock, well what's the point in running carbs nearly three decades past their expiration date? I'm not trying to kick carburetor's out of NHRA, there's plenty of categories for them. If you're going to have a category that is supposed to showcase technology for and from the manufacturers why were they still running an induction system that hasn't been seen since Ronald Reagan was POTUS? I wish they would downsize the cubes as well, maybe that will be down the road. I agree that the bodies need some attention. A few alterations here and there is okay, but the current shape is way out there.

I'da thought the reversed hood scoop would have been appropriate if fuel injection is going to be used - not to shape the hood in such a way as to compromise the stock look to the advantage of aerodynamics.

So everyone wants to go back to the good old days of Pro Stock. You want the cars to better represent a factory offering? So, in the early years we had V-8 vegas, Hemi Colts, and V-8 pintos; which of these represents a factory offering? Pro Stock has always been a bit of a fringe class. Do you think a V-8, 4 door maverick was ever intended to be a race car? I do think the class would be better if the body styles were restricted to performance based models: camaros, mustangs, challenger and chargers would be my choices. Restrict some of the aero crap especially the windshield angle and those awful bulged up hoods for a start. This is my opinion on how to improve the class.

That's kind of my point - Pro Stock wasn't necessarily stock nor something available. But it created the illusion of being stock by having everything from the front clip back close to stock dimensions, which the new cars don't being so aerodynamically altered. I don't think Pro Stock needs to necessarily be stock, but create the illusion. I get it - you can't run 210+ mph with factory sheetmetal; and I understand NHRA's conundrum: the farther they pull them back toward stock, the more they will resemble Factory Super Stock. Maybe the future is those classes meld into one? After all, the wheelstanding, gear jamming FSS cars are much closer to the original Pro Stockers than modern PS.

If part of the new rules state that each car must have the car make or model on the windshield then I think they need to make all of them less egg shaped and more like the factory cars. Might as well have one body for everyone and different wraps for whoever they are sponsored by.

I agree that a 50% more "stock" looking car would be great-but how much you think that will slow them down? 3 tenths? You KNOW that everyone would get un-hinged if the bikes were faster.

No way that fits under the hood. I also doubt the Grays would put their race piece on display for everyone to look at before there has even been 1 event run under this rules package.

Looks like they raised the hood 12 inches to create the extra room needed by eliminating the scoop. These cars are not much more factory looking than funny cars. And why switch from carbs to throttle body injection? There hasn't been a throttle body injection car produced for twenty years.

This is Haas mocking up a team's Pro Stocker for '16. Notice how much "smaller" the injection system is on this car compared to the Gray piece shown above.

To me, that's way cooler than two 4 barrels sitting on a tunnel ram. Can't wait for the Winternationals.

from what I understand the throttle body, injectors and computer are the only regulated items, so teams can build their own manifolds, air intakes, fuel rails etc.

that Gray engine seems to have distributorless ignition with the coil packs mounted on the airbox and the plug leads going straight down behind the fuel rails and over the valvecovers to the plugs.....

whatever happens with the new package for PS, and i really do hope it is successful......
IMO it would be great to see the likes of nissan, toyota, honda join in maybe 2017 or 2018.
toyota already a player in nhra nitro ranks for many years, why not step up with a camry PS?

Toyota is a player in nitro? In name and decals only. Is there a 500ci toyota motor that can be made to run pro stock?
