National Dragster

I love National Dragster. I loved it when it was a “newspaper”, I love it now that it’s a “magazine”. Having served as the editor of an annual publication, I’m absolutely in awe of what that staff is able to turn out on a weekly basis. But then, I’m an unabashed, self-professed magazine-olic. I’m impressed with any publication that’s able to continue operation in this economic climate. Some of the dozen-or-so periodicals that land in my mailbox have severely reduced their size. ‘NASCAR Scene’ has combined with ‘NASCAR Illustrated’, going from a weekly to a monthly. That part certainly sucks, but I feel fortunate that the operation continues at all. Some have fallen by the wayside. In light of Jeff Bezos recently declaring print media a dying technology, I’ll savor every remaining issue of every magazine to which I subscribe. I’ll save the back-issues. And if the ND staff opts to turn the publication into a monthly, I’ll miss the weekly, but I’ll appreciate its existence. --M--

Will anyone be surprised when the printed version of National Dragster becomes a monthly publication instead of weekly?

Won't surprise me as the world of media is a changing one, as you know better than I.
I like the new "Digger" and am glad to still receive it. Just as I learn things at DRO and here, on Nitromater, the National Dragster still provides a view of our sport that is necessary for a thorough understanding of drag racing.
One day I hope to read that drag racers have discovered one of our great, underlying problems: the circular firing squad.
Cheers,

P.S. RMS is now on Facebook. No, I don't know why. I am an old person.

I just want to thank Phil Burgess (ND's editor) for giving Kevin McKenna a full page to write a very nice tribute to late Jim Harrington. Phil and Kevin, jobs well done!

The tribute was richly deserved, but something else struck me about your message.

Both writers you mention are among the very best in the business. Their continuous quality of their work helps the Dragster in ways many may not realize.

There aren't many places for people with their skills these days. I'm happy that the ND is still crankling the issues out.

Why all the National Dragster haters? I guess I look at things different. I know it doesn't have the importance as it once did when it was the only way to get race results, but i still think it's enjoyable to read. Print media is a tough business to be in these days, and I think the people at ND, like Phil Burgess, have worked hard to adapt and keep ND fresh. If you subscribe, I think it works out to less than 1.50 per issue, to me that's cheap to get a weekly drag racing fix mixed in with the all the bills in the mailbox. Don't mean to sound like I work for them, cuz I don't, but I think we need to support what's left of print media in our sport, like ND, Drag Racer mag, Hot Rod, etc., and the subscriptions for all of them work out to peanuts.

I actually do kinda miss mine as it was a good read. However it was always so far behind. At various times I have subscribed to different sporting mags and results were much quicker. Take Sports Illistrated, Sundays games were talked about in an issue that I would get EVERY Thursday. In ND pros are a week behind and for those of us that like sportsman it was confusing. I'm watching on tv stuff already a week delayed, looking online at a current race and looking at stuff in ND 3-4 weeks old. The content is good just way to far behind and there's no reason for it. Also delivery issues have always been a hassle. Miss a week, then the next week get 2 or getting them out of order. My other mags didn't have those issues.

PJ, I'm with ya', and I think ND has been doing a great job re-inventing itself, since it will never again be the place we go to for race results. My point is for something like a buck and a half per week, it's still a great read and something to look forward to in the mailbox besides the bills! I've posted this many times befor, and I'll say it again, in this day and age, I think it's important for all of us drag racers and gearheads to subscribe and support these print mags to help insure they stay around. It's so cheap to subscribe to them, compared to newwstand prices. I just renewed Drag Racer, and am going to do the same with Hot Rod and Drag Racing Action.

I think my mailman hated it when it was a newspaper, but loves it now that it's magazine sized. He said he knows who all the Digger subscribers are... :D
