More Street Outlaws Insanity

I personally don't care if it's scripted or not, i just can't get interested in this show or it's racing "even if it didn't send the wrong message to kids". If Nhra, Nascar, and Indy car ever shut their doors then i guess my weekends would be open to spend a lot more time doing other things in life that's not racing related. A nice sandy beach in Austrailia sounds pretty nice.:)

What was that other series that used to race around on city streets and parking lots and airfields? Oh yea, that would be F1. See the S/O show for what it is, another racing format in a loosely controlled environment. While safety and driver qualifications aren't at what some would consider a pro level, they are better than some organizations and independent promotions were at there infancy. The guys and gals featured are pretty much self policing on who they let run at this point, and what I get from behind the scenes conversations is that they try to weed out the yahoos. The "track" is part of the equation for their racing format. Prove you, and your car, can run wherever, whenever for the most part. Not as controlled or clinical as the pro racing we all watch, but darned entertaining to me. fwiw

I heard the same thing about it is not scripted. But if the wrong guy wins, it will not be aired. Also like Allen Sherman said on Facebook, drag racing version of pro wrestling.

They film a lot more races than they show, the ones they show depends on the story line the production company wants to tell. The only real thing on a show like this is they are using real people, and racing that is not fixed. They do show them loosing races, even the people on the show don't know how a episode is going to turn out until everybody sees it.

The pod casts are better than the show http://www.midweststreetcars.com/#!podcasts/c13ht

Did the horse start breathing again???

the stories I have heard from some of the old timers (Big Daddy for one) was that the promoters would threaten, sometimes with firearms placed on a desk or implied, that the racers not sandbag to save parts but to run all out....but actually setting up winners and losers sounds more like professional boxing than something hardcore racers would resort to.....but it's totally possible

The ultimate catch-22 as I see it. The show, without a doubt sends the wrong message. But it appears to be selling, as well as benefitting manufacturers and retailers of performance equipment. And as we all know, it's all about the $$$. Without the sale, you have nothing.

this tv series and their characters are beating nhra at it's own game, a game nhra invented but lost years ago. nhra used to have 'jungle' 'the snake' ' the mongoose' 'big daddy' 'cha cha' 'the ace' 'tv tommy' 'the praying mantis' 'the surfers' 'grumpy' 'dyno don' 'the orange baron' 'fireman' 'soapy' 'tarzan' 'showtime' 'the brute' 'snowman' 'chi-town' 'hawaiian'...and the list goes on and on. remember being at drags in 70's and hearing announcer ask who would blow the doors off the other, whether calling out car by name, driver, and/or manufacturer.......larger than life characters with name's on their cars and a lot with their own personal moniker. fans loved it.

it is exactly what this show does and it pays off in spades for them. it's today's version of dukes of hazzard, a twist on reality TV with drag racing on the street as the main premise instead of redneck police chasing redneck citizens with tires squealing on dirt roads. bo & luke, roscoe, daisy, jessy, boss hog......today it's big chief, daddy dave, farmtruck, kamikaze, etc......IT'S THE SAME THING!
(yes, i had to look up their names.....unfortunately i remembered the d.o.h. characters )
I have a mid-30's very successful and smart nephew that loves this show and knows all the names without thinking twice and can tell you the plot line of last week's show.....he's smart enough to know it's not real, but the characters and high performance cars have hooked him, he dvr's it if he can't be home to watch it......yet he could care less what the nhra is doing, or any other drag racing series for that matter.
i'm surprised they don't have a 'daisy duke' type driving on this stupid show.

so, give the guys some money to fix up and make their cars look good (except MurderNova and Farm Truck....they can stay ratty), film on a private dragstrip during day and night, and introduce more "characters" with great nicknames and the show will grow even more. Just eliminate the "street" and replace with "Strip Outlaws"(copyright mine if they use it ;)) and maybe not disclose the dollar amounts bet to keep the I R S out of their personal lives

What I was referring to when I talked about staged races was that back in the 60's some of the promoters who ran match racing would decide which rounds you would win and who would win the best either 2 out of 3 or the best 3 out of 5 races.

There was a thread a few years ago on the Jalopy Journal about a guy who match raced from California to Maine back in the mid 60's and he explained in detail just how the promoters ran the shows and when he would not go along with what the promoters wanted he found himself no longer part of the shows that certain promoters put on. He also could not get booked into other promoters shows.

I believe that he finally gave in and agreed to what the promoters wanted so that he could continue to race and make money.

I think we all know that certain teams back in the 60's had parts that were not available to the general public even if you had the money in hand to purchase them.
So in many ways this sort of thing has been going on for years.

Promotion tends to ruin certain aspects of sporting events..... I like when a team can become successful without receiving unfair help from the powers that be.
Like the Ridge Route Terrors, The Freight Train, Stone Woods and Cook, Dick and Kim LaHaie, Tim Wilkerson and many others who got there on their own and run with the big dogs.... and win

Another street race went wrong this morning when they crashed into a church here is Southern Ca. The driver was not injured but his passenger is in surgery. Street racing is out of control here in So Cal.

Do you have a link for this. I can't find it on any of the local news sites.

It makes sense that the racing is real, and they build a script around it. Just like all the car builder shows. They actually build some kick-ass cars, but EVERY show has to build in drama, usually by imposing ridiculous deadlines for completing the builds. And somehow, they always squeek it out, minutes before the big reveal.
