I had it on, but the track downtime was unbelievable and I gave up after round 2. I've found that to be the norm for these races. Would be awesome if they got with the program.
There was downtime at Lights Out for a few reasons but none them were because we "didn't have our act together". When there was a crash or an oil down we got it cleaned up and moved on. The track at SGMP has as hard working a crew as I have ever been around. The Safety Safari is a singular entity in this sport. No one has the resources that they have and the history they have. This being said, SGMP had the tools and people to do the job right and it was done.
Radial drag racing cannot be compared to traditional drag racing with respect to track prep. It is an entirely different process and protocol to keep the track on point for cars that make more horsepower than modern pro mods and run on a 315 tire. Proper glue mix and application is huge as is maintain the rubber layer on the track. In basic terms slick tires leave rubber on the track and radials take it up. The radials bald the starting line and first 60ft if they are not cared for, that's why there is a lot of tractor time.
Most fans of a traditional race struggle with getting over this, but the people that love this style of racing know it and deal. There were significant numbers of people in SGMP from Thursday on and Fri/Sat/Sunday was the most packed I have ever seen a drag strip in my life. It was off the wall and awesome all at the same time. Nothing is without its problems, though. We had fans basically trying to overrun the tower because they had nowhere to sit!
As the drag race tire world continue to migrate more and more to radial (and it will, even the larger tires), you'll see some of this stuff start to change the approach at NHRA races. Those days may be long off yet, but they will arrive.
