COMMERCE, Ga. - In football, when you play both offense and defense, they call it playing 'Ironman.' In baseball, when you can play multiple positions, they call you a 'Utility Player.' In any sport, versatility is a plus. Versatility and experience is what gave NHRA Top Alcohol driver Brandon 'The Kid' Lewis the nod to drive Brad McWilliams' TigerFlow Systems backed Top Alcohol Funny Car in addition to his normal 'gig' of driving his family's TigerFlow/Morrison Construction backed Top Alcohol Dragster during this weekend's Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.
Driving different types of vehicles is nothing new for the 22 year old from Tulsa, Okla. His first race car was in one of the wilder categories of drag racing, a nitro fueled altered at the tender age of 16. At the age of 19, he debuted on the NHRA circuit behind the wheel of the family's Top Alcohol Funny Car. Lewis competed in the Top Alcohol Funny Car class from 2005 until May of last year.
That is when the family purchased Tom Conway's World Championship winning (2005) A/Fuel Dragster and made the switch to the dragster class. Lewis enjoyed immediate success as they reached the finals of the O'Reilly Summer Nationals in Topeka, Ks., and the Fram-Autolite Nationals in Sonoma, Calif. This season, the TigerFlow/Morrison Construction team has been one of the most consistent cars on the circuit, currently ranked fifth nationally on the merits of four semifinal round finishes.
With his success on the track in both dragsters and funny cars, Lewis got the nod from Brad McWilliams to fill in for Kebin Kinsley, who will be driving a drag boat this weekend, in Atlanta.
"I guess I'll be the guy riding up and down the return road on a scooter with my gear on," said Lewis. "I'm pretty excited about the opportunity to drive a Funny Car again. I've always wanted to drive for Brad since he's from the Tulsa area. As long as I don't try to bring the motor up to stage the A/Fueler or leave at idle in the Funny Car, I should be fine. That's been the joke all week. We've even joked about putting shifter buttons in the A/Fueler so I don't forget to shift the Funny Car."
"Our dragster has been running very well," Lewis continued. "Hopefully we can continue that in Atlanta. We kind of stumbled in Dallas a few weeks ago, but that was an easy problem to fix. We shook pretty hard that last qualifier in Dallas, we had to replace the fuel tank. Evidently our spare tank had some debris in it and it got wedged in the barrel valve, causing a fuel leak, which made us have to be shut off. The car ran exceptional; we ran a 5.38 right out of the box. Brad's team made some big strides in Dallas, too, getting into the 5.60's. To be able to drive two great race cars is a dream come true for any driver. Hopefully we can make a good showing with both cars for TigerFlow, Morrison Construction, Lucas Oil, ATTA Tank, Unifirst and A-1 Auto Body."

"Kebin will drive the car most of the year," cited Lewis. "I'll probably drive at two or three more races. Whenever Kebin has a scheduling conflict with his boat racing schedule, I'll jump in and drive for Brad. The Funny Cars are so fun to drive, I'll jump at any chance I get to drive one again."
Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with two sessions, followed by one final session on Saturday morning. Eliminations begin with round one on Saturday afternoon and final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
