POMONA, Calif. - After switching from NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car to Top Alcohol Dragster at midseason last year, Brandon "The Kid" Lewis is looking forward to starting his first full season in the dragster during this weekend's CARQUEST Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, Calif. Strong offseason testing numbers have the team optimistic about their chances of a high finish in national standings. The team is also excited to unveil major associate sponsors Tigerflow Systems and Morrison Construction to join existing associate backers UniFirst, ATTA Tank and Truck Accessories and Lucas Oil.
Lewis, 22, of Broken Arrow, Okla., had quite the up and down season in 2007. When the car was 'on,' the team scored runner up finishes on the national level at Topeka, Kan., and Sonoma, Calif. After struggling at the final two events of the season, the team tested extensively, resulting in a best run of 5.39 at 270 mph in less than ideal conditions. He also cites that Top Alcohol Dragster veteran Tony Volturo has returned to the team to assist his father Dave in tuning the car.
"We did a lot of testing in Tulsa at the end of the year," said Lewis. "We got a few things figured out, so hopefully we can get start the year out on a good note. We've added two new marketing partners TigerFlow Systems and Morrison Construction. ATTA Tank and Lucas Oil have come back on board with us as well."
"Tony Volturo is coming back on board with us as well," Lewis continued. "He has been around the dragsters a long time, and is really pumped about getting out to the track. He will be working with my dad on the tune-up. After the success we had last year, we're pretty excited about what this year may hold."
Qualifying begins on Thursday for the Top Alcohol cars, followed by two more sessions on Friday. Eliminations begin on Saturday with round one and will conclude on Sunday.
