Lewis hoping to build on consistency in Belle Rose

BELLE ROSE, La. - After a very up and down season in his first year behind the wheel of a NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster, Brandon 'The Kid' Lewis hopes to build on some newfound consistency during this weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series opener at No Problem Raceway just outside of New Orleans. Despite bowing out early at the season-opening CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals in Pomona, Calif., the team appeared to find the level of consistency they feel they need to compete for the Division 4 Championship this year.

Lewis, 22, who is a surgical tech in Broken Arrow, Okla., when not drag racing, is looking forward to starting his first full year in the Top Alcohol Dragster class in the family's Injected-Nitro (A/Fuel) Dragster. Last year the team purchased the car from Tom Conway, which won the World Championship in 2005. When the team was 'on,' they were nearly unstoppable, reaching two national event final rounds in Topeka, Kan., and Sonoma, Calif. However, at some events, the car had an alter ego, which the team hopes to lose this season.

"Even though we lost in the first round in Pomona, the car went down the track every run," said Lewis. "I think that's going to be the key to our success this year. We showed the car can run with the best in the country, we just need to put a level of consistency with it. My dad and Tony Volturo found a few things there in Pomona, so hopefully we can build on that this weekend in Belle Rose. We hope to make a good showing for our sponsors TigerFlow, Morrison Construction, Lucas Oil, ATTA Tank, A-1 Auto Body and Unifirst."

After competing for two seasons in the Top Alcohol Funny Car category, the team made the switch to the dragster category in mid season last year. Lewis hopes to contend for the Division 4 title this year along with a strong national finish.

"We feel confident about this year after having the season we had last year," stated Lewis. "We're going to make a hard run at the Division 4 Championship. It's going to be tough because there are a lot of tough cars down here. We're looking forward to the challenge and I can't wait to step on the loud pedal down in Belle Rose."

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
