Double edged sword. Do you really want them in the stands the whole time? If they are in the stands, they aren't out there buying t-shirts. They aren't buying beers. They aren't visiting the midway. They aren't interacting with the marketing agents that the sponsors have out there (Traxxas girls, Army display, etc). They aren't visiting with the drivers and watching the teams work. Which one is more valuable?
Drag Racing is entertainment. They have to be Entertained. It is really counterproductive to charge them big money to get in, then run .90s cars and bracket stuff down the track. The real solution is to run that stuff only at divisional events ( do they still have those?) and replace them with stuff people want to see.

The NHRA isn't going to take all that revenue off the table.

The .90 cars and sportsman classes are a big part of making the event viable. A big sportsman entry list, as well as providing the entry fee cash, can also bring people to the races, family and friends and supporters of those teams that may contribute another thousand or so people to the spectator bottom line. I think the amount of nitro racing in one day at any given NHRA event is generally enough to keep a punter happy, especially by the time they have been through the pits as well.
