Indy weather: Isaac will make appearance

Please calm down everybody. This will be my 29th Indy and we have only gotten completely rained out once!! And I really don't remenber more than 5 other days where we lost sessions. The disclaimer here is that we have spent a lot of time in the campground north of the track when the drive in was there. While that might not be what the Zoo is ( and that's on my bucket list) believe me when I tell you that enough consumables were had that you could tell me it had rained every day for at least 10 years and I might believe you. However I can also tell you that I have seen the best drag racing, the lost heroes and the best racing people in the world. For the guy that purchased his tickets out front (which we stopped doing years ago)
If it rains and the races are canceled NHRA will let you use them/ turn them in for a different race. In the meantime, I probably can't look at this thread again. It's 3 days till travelling. I'll be at 1000 feet on the west side Friday night. Look for me I can't walk so good. I'm looking forward to my first Mater Meeting on Sat. It never rains in Indiana in the summertime. To every one that is going have a safe trip. While I'm personally not religous, I feel blessed to be able to do this for this many years. There's nothing like the US Nationals. God speed and Fire the first Pair!!!:D:D:D

Bob, in the 90's it rained almost every year! But since '03 I'm curious how many sessions were lost to Rain, I bet it wasn't many!

actually....if I remember right, 1990 was one of those years that a lot of races got rained out. They postponed so many races, by the time it got to Denver, and it rained, they just ended-up running them Monday night....first round was in the late afternoon-dusk I think, and the balance of the race through the night....was a great "welcome to Colorado" for me :) Almost an entire national event under the lights.

I really hate to say it, but I hope Issac keeps stalling.....that or just gets a move on and gets the hell out of here!

Sunday's forecast just got substantially worse, but hopefully we'll be OK Monday!

Apparently the weather gods are not happy with the pro classes of NHRA! Forecast I just saw shows 0% chance of rain Thursday and Tuesday but various chances of rain Friday-Monday as mentioned by others above.

Not good at all:

From NWS Indianapolis:

Heavy rainfall from the remnants of Hurricane Isaac during the holiday day weekend could end the drought conditions in central and southern Indiana and cause flooding...reminiscent of Labor Day 2003. On September 1, 2003...much of central Indiana received 6 to 8 inches of rainfall. Significant flooding quickly developed after this rain.

There is, however, a glimmer of hope.

This is taken form the forecast discussion this morning:

THE TRACK AND HEAVY RAIN POTENTIAL FROM ISAAC WILL CONTINUE TO BE
BIG CONCERNS IN THE LONG TERM...EVEN MORE SO WITH IT BEING LABOR DAY WEEKEND.

ALL THE MODELS AND ENSEMBLES ARE AT LEAST NOW AGREEING ON THE
REMNANTS OF ISAAC CURVING FROM THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY NORTHEAST AND THEN EAST ACROSS SOUTH CENTRAL INDIANA LATE IN THE WEEKEND.

EARLIER ECMWF AND ENSEMBLE RUNS ALONG WITH NHC HAD THE TRACK MUCH FURTHER NORTH ACROSS NORTHERN INDIANA.
THE 00Z ECMWF AND 00Z GEM ARE SLOWER THAN THE 00Z GFS OR 00Z GEFS TO BRING IT EAST.

WITH THE UNCERTAINTY...DID NOT DEVIATE MUCH FROM THE CR INITIALIZATION OR ALLBLEND EXCEPT TO BUMP QPF UP A BIT.

I live close to Terre Haute, about 60 miles from the track. Today. the local radio station reported that the City of Indianapolis is making sand bags for this weekend's rain and flooding....5 to 8 inches are being forecast...SEE YA FRIDAY at the DRAGS!!!!:D

30% Chance of Indy ?

Weather.com show 70% chance of rain on Sat and Sun with heavy storms on Sunday. If that happens with that many cars its going to a cluster**** for many of the competitors...especially the Sportsman

I saw that too....let's hope this storm decides to take a different path!! Regardless, I'll be at the track drinking a beer on Sunday and Monday....hopefully I'm watching racing and not the rain!! Fingers crossed :D

I wonder if the will push things up and run both Traxxas events on Saturday

local news estimates 4-7 inches of rain total sat and sun- good chance of flooding at the track??

Yes, If parked on the track property itself. In 2003 we had 7" of rain and campers were inundated with water. I know a lot of people who had to leave them behind.

Off site the mud will make it difficult to pull trailers and/or get traction.

The models do not look good and it appears that while the chances of rain begin on Friday, the heaviest rain will occur Saturday evening and then all day on Sunday.

Here's an animated loop of the GFS Model. (It goes out until Sept 15. so you may want to slow the animation rate down)

There isn't anything anybody can do about the Weather, *****ing about it won't mean a thing!

That's right Joe, as dry as it has been around these parts that tropical depression might just evaporate at the Illinois boarder just like every other front did this summer.

This is a big storm, so to think it will dry out is optimistic. Looks like Friday will be good and we might get lucky and get a session in Sun. and we will race on Monday. Fingers are crossed we get some racing in this weekend.

This is my sisters first US Nationals, and first race in America (my first US Nats since 07) I'm going to remain positive that she gets to see some good fuel and top alcohol racing - she came out to America just for this race all the way from Australia, so for it to be completely ruined, that would be depressing. Trying hard to keep positive :)

Paul will you be attending?

Mike.
