I do not like this!! Thoughts people?? (Enclosed cockpit)

Because he retired!;)

I'm pretty sure he had an enclosed cockpit on all his dragsters since SW30. I believe that when fuelers started using enclosed cockpits NHRA made them have extra onboard fire systems and the weight gain wasn't justified.

About time we see some innovation in Top Fuel again!

he raced SR 33 plenty of times without it!

Don't like it. We need to see more of the drivers, not less. The way the body panels have evolved over the last 15 years have taken away from the sport for me. Same in F/C with the body lines, shrouding etc, but thats another story. Looks like we are headed to 1 fuel class, a hybrid of both......................

I guess you don't remember the old days when they wore the masks that completely covered them up.

You can't see a funny car driver, hasn't seemed to hurt the popularity of those drivers. I am not a big fan of the way the body panels have evolved either, but again, it is aerodynamics.

Didn't we lose a guy from debris flying into the cockpit? Not sure if this is truly an enclosed cockpit like the drag boats, but I hope it is. Tony looked pretty comfortable sitting in it.

LOVED the cars from the 80s streamline craze. Cool to see this again. Wonder if nhra will put the kabash on it.

The leading edge of the assembly is rather square and not very aerodynamic looking. Kinda surprised by that.

Either way, it looks cool and safer is always better!

I've always liked those cars myself, and was kind of bummed to see them go away in the quest for weight loss.

When I first spotted that cowling over the roll cage of The Sarge, I wondered to my self how long it was going to be before a canopy appeared. i guess this answers my question.

If this is related to safety, I doubt NHRA will kill it. Besides, any added weight would have the benefit (To the NHRA) of slowing the cars down a bit, however slight that might be.

As for me, I'm giving it two thumbs up!

From my understanding, this is way beyond what Big Daddy had! Big just had a lexan cockpit cover that really didn't offer much additional safety, except for maybe protecting from debris.

Maybe I should back up since it isn't clear from the link....is this one of the safety capsules like on the top fuel boats, or is it just a cockpit cover? If it is the safety capsule, then way, way different from what Big had.

YES IT IS a Brendell drag boat saftey capsule

I know James and saw this 3 years ago

There have been a few canopy cars over the years. This new dsr canopy car reminds me of the old larry bowers car.

How many canopy cars have there been.

The Mongoose had one back in the 60's with an injected cammer in it
Craig Breedlove had one in fact there were a few "liner" cars around the same time as Breedloves.

Garlits had the most famous one.
Connie Kalitta had one
Darrell Gwynn had one

How many others were there.

I like it. Anything to keep our drivers safer from explosions - fires - debris... I don't see NHRA putting the kabash on it either, if anything they will make it mandatory for 2012.

Joe Amato had a real good looking one -
