Damn. I thought Topeka was a go this year.

There went another one. :(

Congratulations politicians. In your greed for tax dollars you took millions of dollars annually out of your local economy and harmed every restaurant, hotel, conveneince store, gas station, and more in the county. How will you make it up? By increasing taxes on the locals!

In a smaller market like Topeka (#227 in population according to Wikipedia) that's gonna leave a mark!

Before you start to feel sorry for Chris, just remember under the previous owner's watch, that track two NHRA National events every year from almost the day it opened. The first 4 and 300 in FC were set at that track. They had one or two NHRA DIvisionals every year. They had a NASCAR truck date on the road course. They had a World Of Outlaws sprint car date. Blah, Blah, Blah... That track was rockin' before the current guard took over. You don't mismanage a business for years/decades, and then decide everyone is just trying to shut you down. You also don't forego tax payments for years/decades, then try to cut a deal for a small fraction of what is owed. If the county would have cut him a deal, what is stopping him from doing again?

Word has it that Chris sold the land that Flying H is being built on to a group of owners. I sure hope that is the case. I hope he is in no way involved. And since Flying H is next to the land that Chris' I70 dirt track is on, I sure hope that does not cause problems in the future.

Chris also bought Columbus from the NHRA. He ran that into the ground, too. It sounds like the current owners saved it and have a great following.

I am in know way taking up for him on the tax issues. If it really was raised as high as he says, it sounds unreasonable. I have attached the auditor page for Norwalk. If you click on “tax“ it shows the Baders pay just over $16,000 per year. How in the world would a drag strip afford the claimed $1500 daily. Something doesn’t jive somewhere

For Norwalk, there’s nothing listed under improvements, athough there is $556k claimed by the county for improvements. All told, the tax liability is $420,000. This seems very high. I don’t know how they afford it.

The statement does not make sense. If the county devalued the property, as stated, then why did the taxes go up?

Property taxes go up when the value of the property goes up.

If you click on the taxes tab, it shows they pay around $16,000 in taxes for Norwalk per year.

Something doesn’t add up here. I know nothing about the place so all of this is just Googling news stories.
The property was bought for $2.4m in 2016. There was a lawsuit about the county later assessing it at $10m and they later seem to have agreed on $7.5m.
So how could property taxes possibly be $500k a year? That would have to be a 6.5% property tax.
Then there’s the matter of the unpaid taxes of $2.6m or so. If you’re thinking about selling the property, that’s a big chunk of change, so maybe the thought was to take the county to court to get a concession on the tax, then put the property up for sale?
Then reading the comments above from other posters it gets even murkier.

Hey does Is or was Shelby Ebert still working for HPT? Oh my gosh…. she’s so fun. One heck of a race boat driver…. And quite the go-fast jet ski pilot too, I might add. Her parents were great too. Her Dad raced hydro as well. Fun memories
