He once wrote in his column that was either in Road and Track or Car and Driver (I forget which magazine he wrote for) that Dale Earnhardt would be hanging drywall or digging ditches if it wasn't for his ability to drive a car, basically saying Earnhardt wasn't very smart. Daytona rolls around and everyone keeps telling Yates that Earnhardt is not happy with him. Their paths finally cross and Yates says "I hear you are upset with me" and in his inimitable way Earnhardt grabbed Yates by the neck and pulled him close, scaring Yates half to death, and Big E started laughing and simply said "you are probably right".
