BIR 2015

Thanks Eugene, should be some great times as long as rain stays away. People who decided not to go might just miss the best race ever at BIR.
There are a few of us here in Clearwater Mn waiting for the rain to stop so that we do not get the haulers dirty during the last 70 mile drive to the track.

The best race ever at BIR, in my opinion, was in 2005. Schumacher ran the fastest speed ever recorded in the 1/4 mile at 337.58, running a 4.44 (I think) in the process. Cory Mac was in the other lane and ran a 4.50@328 and Tony was clearly pulling away. My then 8-year old daughter was with me that day for her first trip ever to the races, and she still talks about it.

Running a close second would have to be 2010, when Bode won FC. That was 2010, wasn't it Eugene? About 5 years ago...

Yes, it was 2010. That was a pretty good year for us...after we won Brainerd we went to Indy and ran our best two passes ever with a 4.10 and 4.11. Plus, very little parts breakage and no oil downs that year.

I just searched on youtube and found the clip. Your memory is in good shape. 278 mph at the eighth on the 337 pass. Now, 290 at the eighth happens, so I wonder what the quarter-mile speeds would be now.

You're correct Mike! What I most remember about 1990, besides the first BIR 4-second run, was how freaking chilly it was when it happened. My brother and I had gone up Thursday morning and watched the day's festivities which included a TAD/TAFC qualifying session, in mid-90's heat. By Sunday eliminations, the temperature had dropped 40 degrees and there was quite the northerly breeze that made it seem like winter had arrived. I had every piece of clothing on that I had brought with for the weekend trying to stay warm, and it wasn't enough so I bought a jacket in the nitro mall. I remember paying $60 for a red Winston Drag Racing Members Only-type jacket. Yes...Member's Only...hey, it was 1990 after all.

Iffen I remember correctly, Jason's win was vacated because he'd inadvertently used the wrong pistons in his Buick. Or am I thinking about someone else?

I'm sitting here waiting to park and i am impressed with what they have done to get this place back to race ready. The gas station/mini mart just outside of the track has closed, so now you can't ride your scooters, or drive your golf carts for supplies this year.

dave, no jason's '93 win stands and was not questioned.....i believe that same buick will be running in stock this weekend.

eugene......guess the owners were going to re-open the shell station next to front gate but the storm shifted priorities.
yes it will suck not having tom thumb open anymore.....the sunoco c-store on other side of hwy will be closest......have to make sure
there's a enough vittles packed......i think the liquor store behind tom thumb is still open?, so that's a plus

I have a bunch of great memories from BIR. For the people that go, you know what it's all about. For the people that have not been, you don't know what you are missing, and words/photos does not do it justice. Just cruising around on whatever party rig you happen to be on just people watching on the roads through the zoo can be fun. You never know who might be out there looking for a ride, or a place to hang out for awhile.

A couple of many that stick out-
One year Scott Geoffrion jumped on our party trailer at random and he cruised around the Zoo with us for a couple hours just BS-ing with us and having a good time. Normally no big deal but he passed away shortly after that, and it stuck with me how nice of a guy he was, and fun to be around. Right in that same time frame we picked up Norm Drazy (PSI) walking out by himself in the back 40. We cruised around for hours talking about current racing, racing history, a lot of blower development stories and things like that.

As for an overall favorite year/moment, For me it was hard to top 1990 with the first 4 second runs and Joe winning. Joe had a big match with Ormsby in the semi-final, and to win that and run 4.99 was almost unreal. Before that final, I was running back and fourth between Joe's and Frank Bradley's pit area. Once it became apparent to me Frank was not going to make the call, I ran back to Joe and told him. Being I was pretty young still I don't think he trusted my opinion 100% and took off on his bike to find out for himself. Sure enough Joe got a single, but he would have been tough to beat on that run. (4.97)
