[coverattach=1]On the strength of a 6.628-second, 208.97 mph pass made on Friday afternoon, Greg Anderson qualified his Summit Racing Pontiac fifth for Sunday’s final eliminations of the O’Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals in Dallas, TX. Even though competitors in the Pro Stock category were allotted two additional attempts, the naturally-aspirated Pro Stock Cars were slowed by the near-90 degree heat at the Texas Motorplex on Saturday, essentially turning the last runs into test sessions with teams prepping for the forecasted higher temperatures on Sunday.
Anderson and his Summit crew took advantage of the opportunity to post a pair of 6.66-second runs, including the third quickest pass in the heat of Saturday afternoon, producing mixed emotions. Although pleased with how the runs felt and looked, the three-time champion was still disappointed with how they compared to the quickest car in the class. Fully confident that his team was capable of keeping pace, if not leading the pack, Anderson’s search for performance will continue into race day.
“I believe the move to switch cars was a good one, because this Summit Racing Pontiac is running nice and smooth, not shaking the tires like my other car,” said Anderson. “But we’re still not running the way we are capable of, which naturally has us a little worried. We’ve been working to try and find what the issue is, but we just haven’t found the answer.
“It’s certainly frustrating, but we know the solution is in there somewhere, so we’re going to keep studying, practicing and trying, doing whatever it takes to get back on track. The biggest danger at a time like this is getting so worked up about the situation that you make a ton of changes and end up even worse. That’s one thing we will make sure and avoid.
“We could also be content that the car is making nice, smooth runs, and just see what we can do to win a few rounds on Sunday. But we didn’t come here to place – we came here to win, so we’re going to keep swinging, doing what we can to make this program better, starting with the first round tomorrow.”
