[coverattach=1]On the heels of his being the first Pro Stock driver in the history of Bandimere Speedway to record a six-second elapsed time, Greg Anderson qualified his Summit Racing Pontiac fifth for Sunday’s final eliminations of the Mile-High Nationals in Denver, CO. In each of his final two attempts on the Colorado quarter-mile, Anderson made competitive runs, but his 6 .993-second time from Friday remained his run of record. Despite earning his sixth Top Five starting spot in his last seven races “on the mountain”, the three-time NHRA Pro Stock champion immediately focused on improving his performance even further for race day.
“Overall, it wasn’t a bad day,” said Anderson. “It’s fun to go out there and run six-seconds, but with the guy in the other lane running 6.95 and 6.96, the reality is we are still three to four hundredths off, which isn’t good enough to win races. We didn’t make the gains today that we wanted, so we obviously have to keep working on our Summit Racing Pontiac, trying to get it done tomorrow, and we have at least one and hopefully four more chances to figure it out.
“But the20news isn’t all bad. We’re not making bad runs, we’re just not satisfied with where we are. We’re going to keep working tonight finding out why our car isn’t running faster than it is, starting off by determining whether it’s in the engine or the car department. Even so, we’re certainly not pulling our hair out. The cars are not far off, it’s a matter of finding the missing ingredient. Hopefully we’ll have happy hot rods tomorrow.
“It’s going to be completely different than any qualifying run we’ve had, which is certainly not the ideal situation. It’s fun to run when it’s cool and the lights are on and you run fast, but that means nothing for race day. That’s over, so now you have to figure out how to race on a slippery, greasy track. It’s going to be a challenge for the crew chiefs and anoth er opportunity, which is something we always welcome. Tomorrow’s going to be a big one, and we need to capitalize better than the rest of them. It’s that’s simple. It’s going to be tough, but we’ve done it before.”
