The same time that IHRA included the injected nitro combination in Top Fuel the class got super-tough. The previous two years had shown short fields and soft bump spots. The theory was to get some good A/FD's in the mix to shore up the bottom half of the ladder. If they got lucky on race day they might get by a TF car or two and have a good showing. The problem became that the TF bump went from soft to killer the moment they allowed the injected cars in the show. Bad timing?
For the record...the injected nitro combination had no nitro limit, no cubic inch limit, no weight minimum, no gear rule, and did allow the use of nitrous to some extent. Stark was the one racer that worked the hardest to compete and I think he ran as fast as 5.17 and qualified a couple times.
There would be no shortage of talent if IHRA threw out the current TF rules and went to an all-A/FD program...no matter what rules they imposed on them. 16-car fields would be easy to fill. I am very surprised that it has not yet occured. What better way to build your own brand of nitro racing and provide a big show for a lower costs to the stars? Not to mention the increased safety and lessened oil-down time!
Totally agree with what your saying, but i guess thats just the politics of life sometimes...but in a dream world i would love to see an A-fuel car go down the track with everything it can possibly muster up...but thats just the dream world and not reality i guess.
