We sat about the 300' mark, about were they stopped after the burnout.
We attend at least 3 races a year, this year will be 4, we won't go back to the 4 wide again, it's very confusing, they don't seem to be able to get the timing electronics to work, ask Herbert, Connelly and Enders.
while the finals were fast qualifying took forever but part of that was trying to repair the track that kept coming apart.

as for the drivers "drinking Bruton's kool aid" when Greg Anderson was asked if he liked the 4 wide or not he said something like "well I guess i have to like now" and that was before he won.
I'm sure after the first 4 wide when all the drivers had their mini revolt I'm sure they all had a good 'talking' to by NHRA because Bruton was PO'd they didn't like it, ever since then all the driver just "LOVE" it....

We often complain that nhra doesn't do anything to improve/grow the sport. When they finally dare to try something new, and different everyone panics... and says "don't let it be an offical race-exhibition only". I don't get the fear of a slight change, it's still a drag race. Sit back & enjoy.:D

Paul, I went up in the stands and watched all the finals and it was pretty neat. The only thing that I did different on the starting line was when we were in lanes 2 or 3, I would wait until after the car did the burnout before I walked out past the tree. The hardest part is trying to keep track of the condition of four lanes. But other then that, it was business as usual. The fans that I was sitting around in the stands looked like they were loving it, and on Monday I was at a restaurant in Mooresville Nc, and the girl that was my waitress recognized me from the track and said that she had been at the race. I asked her how she liked it and she said she loved it and couldn't wait until the next one. I do not have a problem with a 4-wide race one time a year.:)

I wish others here could be as open minded as you are sir. 4-wide will not end drag racing, the sky wil not fall because of it, ect. ect.

To me, the four wide deal takes away from the professionalism of the sport and makes it more of an exhibition.

I'm curious to know what the people on here would think if MLB built two baseball fields right next to each other, or if the NFL built two football fields right next to each other and played two games at one time and totally changed up how the winner is chosen? That would never happen, because that isn't how the game is played. To me, the same goes for drag racing. That's the angle I'm coming from.

JMHO

Totaly different. In the ball games the teams are trying to score during a given time period. The drag race is a "sudden death" so to speak. First one to the finish line wins. Instead of comparing to ball games, I think compare the race to a track meet dash. Doesn't mater if there are 2 lanes 4 lanes or 8 lanes.

Don't get me wrong, as I've said before, I'm not saying go 4-wide everywhere. Zmax on the east coast, Vegas on the west. Both have two races so let the fans decide what one to go to. And maybe Indy for the folks in the center of the country.

that's a good analogy if the sprinters were accelerating to over 300 mph and you still had time to give each competitor a good glance or two, but they don't, and you wouldn't....there's witnessing a race, then there's enjoying a race....part of my enjoyment is experiencing each cars run...not the net result...but then I am one that cheers the Rodney Flournoy's of this sport, not slapping the current #1 on my shirt saying "I am a winner"

don't ever utter those words again.... (in all good humor)
but seriously....don't....

.....That was a great article Eugene.....Even though I'm not really in the 4-wide camp as far as being able to follow what's happening as the cars are going down the track, it doesn't take anything away from NHRA dragracing to have a fan write such an appreciative article !!!.....Hope she gets a chance to see more events !!!...........................e

I may have converted a couple of long time NASCAR fans this weekend. Been trying to get my buddy from the Charlotte area to ZMax since it opened, he had a son playing baseball and there was always a game. It worked out this year, and he came over Friday afternoon for a look. Got there just after Q1, and I took him straight to the pits. Walked in and right up to a fuel warm up. And right over to another warm up. After the second one, I think he was hooked. He just stood there and said "This is awesome!" Was even standing right behind Dom Lagana's car when he whacked the throttle during his warm up. I'm not sure that he is quite over that, yet. :) He must have enjoyed the evening, the next day he came back and brought his wife. She was actually on the edge of her seat all day. They say that we can count on them being there next year. I believe them.
