Jim Yates turned in a career best of 6.648 seconds Friday night and will start ninth for Sunday's rain-plagued Toyo Tires Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway.
Yates added a 6.717-second effort in the Wiley X Eyewear Pontiac GTO during Saturday's lone qualifying session before rain washed out the remainder of qualifying. The event itself was postponed two weeks following inclement weather.
Yates, of Occoquan, Va., meets Allen Johnson (No. 8, 6.645 at 207.72 mph).
