BRAINERD, Minn.(8/14/06) -- Jim Yates drove the Wiley X Eyewear Pontiac GTO to a first-round finish Sunday in the Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.
In another example of the close NHRA Pro Stock competition, Yates qualified 10th, one-thousandth of a second slower (6.767 seconds to 6.768) than first-round rival Kurt Johnson, who was seventh and gained lane choice.
Johnson stopped the timers first, finishing in 6.768 seconds at 203.52 mph to Yates' 6.783 at 203 mph. Yates, who remained fourth in NHRA POWERade Series points with 896, moves to Memphis for this weekend's O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals.
