Yates Comes Up Three-thousandths Of A Second Short Of Quarterfinals

Ennis, TX (Sept. 24, 2006) - Jim Yates did what he needed to do Sunday in the opening round of the O’Reilly Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex, but he came up a few inches shy of advancing to the quarterfinals.

On a day with entirely different conditions than Yates and the Wiley X Pro Stock Pontiac GTO team had seen during the two days of the qualifying, Yates left the starting line first against Mike Edwards (.024-second to .029). But Edwards closed the slight gap and stopped the timers first, winning with a 6.695-second, 206.29-mph run to Yates’ 6.702 at 204.76.

“We just missed the tune-up today,” said Yates. “We had a huge swing in (atmospheric) conditions from Saturday's last qualifying run to Sunday. We knew in our minds exactly what we wanted to do to the car but we came up three-thousandths of a second short. We thought it would run much faster but the car just didn't respond. We missed the ultimate combination.

“We had an opportunity to make up some ground in points, too, but we’ll just get ready to go back to Reading (Pa., site of the rain-delayed Toyo Tires Nationals, Sept. 29-Oct. 1) and try to do it there.”

Yates remained seventh with 971 points.
