Yates Works to Eradicate Glitch Going into Toyo Tires Nationals

The dictionary defines a glitch as "malfunctioning", which, unfortunately, doesn't provide any assistance to Pro Stock driver Jim Yates.
Yates knows there's a mechanical glitch in his Wiley X Eyewear Pontiac GTO but doesn't know where it is occurring. But he is certain the malfunctioning part will be found before qualifying begins Friday for Sunday's conclusion of the rain-delayed Toyo Tires Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway.

"A component isn't working properly and Jamie (Yates, team crew chief) has been at the shop working on the dyno, testing different parts to make sure they will work properly," said Yates, who is eager to get back to the track. "

He was runner-up at Maple Grove last year and won there in 2002, 1996 and 1997. His focus now is on winning as many rounds as possible in the final four races of the 2006 NHRA POWERade Series season to claim a berth in the top five. He is currently seventh (971 points) but within 108 points of that coveted No. 5.

"Bill (Jenkins, engine builder/tuner) is busy working on our race motor at his Malvern (Pa.) shop while Jamie is working at our shop (near Yates' Occoquan, Va. home) to take care of the other problem.

"Our GTO made excellent runs (last weekend) at Dallas and the conditions will be fast again this weekend at Reading. We are looking forward to putting good numbers on the scoreboard."

Qualifying runs are scheduled at 2 and 5 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday. Sunday's eliminations begin at 11 a.m.

This is the second of three consecutive races. The Torco Racing Fuels Nationals is up next, Oct. 6-8, at Richmond, Va.
