POMONA, Calif. - Jim Yates saw a lot of potential in his new Wiley X Eyewear/Sea Ray Boats Pontiac GTO en route to qualifying 11th for Sunday's season-opening NHRA Carquest Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
"I was very happy with our team," said the driver from Occoquan, Va. "We have a competitive engine. We changed gear ratios and chassis settings. We were hoping the last one would be our best one. We wanted to finish in the top half of the field so we'd get lane choice on Sunday."
Yates starts 11th (6.671 seconds at 207.43 mph) and races Jeg Coughlin (sixth, 6.661 at 207.98) in the opening round.
"We'd like nothing more than to begin the season by getting some round wins," added Yates. "We want to start the season on the right foot."
