Jim Yates and the Wiley X Eyewear Pro Stock Pontiac GTO missed a trip to the quarterfinals of the Toyo Tires Nationals by a mere one-thousandth of a second Sunday at Maple Grove Raceway.
Yates, who recorded the quickest elapsed time of his career (6.648 seconds) during qualifying, came back with a 6.665-second time in the first round against Allen Johnson, whose 6.668 barely clicked the win light before Yates reached the finish line.
The Occoquan, Va.-based driver remained in seventh place in NHRA POWERade Series standings with 1003 points. He is 73 points behind Allen Johnson going into the season's final three races (and 12 elimination rounds).
Next up is the Torco Racing Fuels Nationals - the closest event to Yates' hometown - unfolds at Virginia Motorsports Park near Richmond, Oct. 6-8.
