W.o.O. on SpeedChannel Mother's Day afternoon at 2:00 eastern. It's from Eldora so it should be a good show.

Other thoughts:
IndyCar: I like the new qualifying format for Indy. Puts some excitement back into it that has been sorely lacking. Still not perfect but a lot better.

NASCAR: DEI and Michael Waltrip Racing should join forces to see if they can set a world record for stupidity and futility (if there is some way to measure that!). Sheesh.

I really liked the new format for qualifying at Indy... I know this is the first time they have been able to use this version... I also know it kept most of the teams that had no shot at the pole from running, but the shootout for the pole was very exciting... You would think that someone would push it a little to hard and bang the wall going balls out (so to speak) but, the true talent rose to the top, and the 11th place bump spot made it interesting... I thought it was cool... I'll tune in tomorrow for a while and see how it plays out... Indy has always been my never miss event...

The greatest spectical in sports... :D

BTW- I could not understand a word Milka spoke... :D  :p

We have a 1/3 mile clay oval real close to here, the WoO would visit once or twice a year.
Love those monsters.
They stopped coming here a couple of years ago. Not sure why. I miss them.

Penske does it again. Helio on pole. Took me by surprise. Not sure what the heck happened to Kanaan coming out of 3.
Thought AGR would get it, oh well. Go Micheal Andretti! I just want to see him finally shake the 500 jinx and win it.

WOO used to visit bridgeport speedway an hour south of me. It is a clay banked 5'/8ths mile. it is flat out all the way around. If i recall I think the track record is 143 mph average. State of NJ apparently had a problem with the way the fuel lines were shielded as they passed through the drivers compartment and the WOO disappeared for about 8 years. They do now however visit New Egypt speedway but its a much shorter and tighter track with them off the throttle at every turn. The WOO will be there nest Sunday in fact. If my family or wife hasn't complicated my life already with some sort of task next weekend I will attempt to make a trip there.

Just checked the TV schedule on the WoO website and it look like they will be on TV every Sunday. Now until June 10 on Speed, then ESPN2 June 17-Aug 19, then back on Speed for the rest of the year.

Unfortunately, most of my Sundays are already booked full...

Paul, the Sky rocketing Purse the WoO now demands has priced many tracks out! Last I heard it was $150,000 for a 2 day show, unless you can pull in over 5,000 per day at $25-30 you'll lose your ass!

We still get the WoO guys twice a year here in Vegas. They run with the NASCAR boys in the spring (first week of March) and with SEMA in the fall (usually same weekend as NHRA National Event or Div 7 finals) so they have a built in audience for each show.

I forgot yesterday was pole day at Indy which shows how much American open wheel racing has fallen off my radar. I saw the last 45 minutes of qualifying, and I guess that was all I needed to see. The month of May used to be my favorite month as a kid, as the month seemed symmetrical, perfect. Growing up in Louisville we had the Derby the first weekend of May, we would drive up to Indy for pole day the following weekend, then you had bump day the following weekend, then the 500 the following weekend. Just good times all the way through the month.

The most important thing that happened in motorsports this week happened in Barcelona,Spain early this morning. Felipe Massa won the race in his Ferrari, but Lewis Hamilton finished on the podium again, and assumed the lead in the World Championship, as a rookie. Lewis has finished every race on the podium so far, and is a win waiting to happen. Oh yeah, it just so happens that Lewis is black. Lewis is the first black man to ever race in F1 and he is now leading the Championship, expect to hear more about this as the season goes on and rightly so. Who knows, F1 may finally even crack the consciousness of American racing fans, particularly those abandoned by the Champ Car/IRL split.

Ray - finally some excitement at Indy and for the first time in a LONG time the first 22 cars are within 4-5 mph. Still a lot of talented drivers left to qualify next weekend. Went to the 500 with my Dad eight times before he passed away - some great memories. I'm going back this year for the first time in 45 years with seven other old fart racing fans. Should be a great time and hopefully, a great race!

One of these years I have got to make it there and watch a race in person... I always tape the radio broadcast and replay it many many times minus the commercials of course while I spend hours airbrushing or on those long distant trips in the dually... You can't beat those radio guys when it comes to voicing excitement... :D

I also have my collection of T/F, F/C BB/Cars all on tape from the top end at Fremont... NOTHING like hearing a BB/FC screaming at ya like a bat outta hell and the butterflies slap shut, chutes out and the motor winding down and that distinct rear end sound as they coast to a stop... :D That was back in the day with a Radio Shack tiny boom box... Not all the hi-tech crap they have now that sounds like it is in the bottom of a pool...

I never have figured out why they cannot get the sound even close...

You old farts have fun Jim... Better take bail money!! LOL

I grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa..Hawkeye Downs when it was dirt was cool. 9-11 yrs old joined my Dad pushing 1/4 midgets..sprints when they showed up. I distinctly remember the #2 Bardahl Special car..sticks in there.

Spent 20yrs in Knoxville, Iowa..which is really the sprint car capitol of the world. National Sprint Car Hall of Fame sits just over turns 1-2 with corporate suites. Pulls in 3-5000 for the weekly shows..Knoxville Nationals does 25,000+ for the Saturday final alone..and over 70-80k for the 4 days. Over 6-7 million $ for the local area is generated. It's owned by the County of Marion, where Knoxville resides. Suites above the grandstands over the main chute. Paved infield.

Have seen lots of greats roll through there..Little Al when he was 16..Jeff Gordon running middle of the pack. K. Schrader (sp)..T. Stewart with USAC and many oldies. Wolfie ruled for many years.

Before they put wings on the track record was around 18.3..and this is a legit 1/2 mile..from the inside. With wings it's down to 14.4..now I'm not a math dude..but that's movin. They needed wings just for safety..if you can believe 4 sec a lap faster is safer..which it is. When you roll..a wing makes a triangle out of it instead of barrel rolling forever. They even ran midgets for a while until they started hurting people. They're running midgets again..with the wings.

Saw great racing and some major tragedies. It actually still breaks my heart to think about the bad ones.

Knoxville rocks..

On June 22nd and 23rd, USAC and Badger have a co-sanctioned Midget show at Knoxville. It is the Pepsi/Mt. Dew Midget Classic. No wings on the midgets. They've run this show for three or four years. I've never seen it but hear it is a heck of a deal. 360 Sprinters will also be appearing. Wish I could make it to Knoxville sometime but it's too far of a drive for me with everything else I have going on.

Ray - I don't think this group needs to worry about bail money! I'm the youngster at 60. Our oldest member is Ray Haroun's (1st Indy winner) grandson. He's 91 and will be driving up from Florida to meet us. Can't wait to get a photo of he and I standing next to his Grandad's "Wasp" in the Museum!
